Segasa (Williams Licensed) Travel Time - Third Fuse Keeps Blowing after roughly half dozen strikes of targets or bumpers

Hi
Bought this about 25 years ago and its been moved an stored a couple of times.

Resets fine when starting game.
Ball in play - flippers fine
Strikes targets and/or buffers which register OK with noise etc. and the counter mechanism works but the scores not registering on the reel.
After half dozen strikes of targets and buffers the third fuse blows.
Only thing I've noticed is that the coil attached to the counter is no longer copper in colour but dark grey - which is suspicious clearly.

Any thoughts on the possible cause of the fuse blowing and stopping the machine greatly appreciated.

Sounds like one of your score relays may be locking on - would be caused by the contacts on the switch on that relay that will activate the relevant score reel solenoid not passing current. This is most likely to be that they are dirty from lack of use, but could be due to a wire becoming detached or the contacts being too far apart so they don't touch when the switch closes.

Solution - identify the relevant relay (it will be the one permanently activated before the fuse blows, and may be making a buzzing sound), clean the contacts with a thin file, and examine the operation of the relay to ensure all switches which are open when the relay is at rest close when it becomes active, and all switches which are closed at rest open when it becomes active

Note it is not good to leave any relay which is designed for short duration operation activated for very long as the coil will become hot and melt and/or go short circuit and unusable. This usually happens before a fuse blows so you may have been lucky so far. For this reason, limit your fault finding with the problem relay active to very short durations

Thank you - will follow your advice.

You can also get this problem if you have a normally open switch on the playfield that stays closed after you hit it - most commonly it will be one of the stand up switches behind one of the large rubber rings
Many thanks for that - all switches look good, don't stay closed.

Going back to original suggestion - this is clearly not a good sign (see photograph). Probably needs replacing before anything else? Anyone any idea on a part number as sleeve has obviously burned away. This is the one attached to the reel counter.

Thanks in anticipation.

That's the main motor. Does it run (ie do all the switches to the side of it move up and down?) They can be OK, even when they look like that
Many thanks. Yes they do. So I'm going to try and clean the switches as suggested.

The switches you are looking for are on the relevant relay in the back box. I would not advise touching those switches next to the motor, they are very unlikely to be the cause of your problem and you run the risk of introducing new problems.

Are you able to post some video showing exactly what you think it is doing wrong?

Don't leave it on very long with that loud buzzing - that is a relay stuck on which shouldn't be and it will quickly burn the coil.

Which switch did you press on the playfield to create the buzz?

Can you quickly identify where it is actually coming from? (don't spend too long with it active for the reason above)

As the 1,000 didn't score in your video look at the 1,000 relay in particular

However this is an unusual game in that it doesn't count the balls like nearly any other game - instead it is time based
I'm not familiar with how the circuit operates to achieve that (I've never had one of these ) but I noticed it changed from clock stopped to clock running as you entered the top lane, so there may be a short circuit in the timer circuit

Do you have the schematic (circuit diagram) ?

I'm going to get an electrical engineering friend around to run through your various suggestions - so may disappear for a while as we work things through.
Sadly - no diagrams.

Looking online - for the clock - there is a clock stepper unit which is pulsed from a small electronic "pulse" board - details on the schematic JT. linked and in the picture on the right of the video linked below
These links may be helpful for your friend

But I would definitely look at the score relays (esp 1,000) first - your problem could very easily be down to just one switch

Wow brilliant.
Thanks
