Sega Naomi Cabinet Drop in replacement pc solution with JVS

Been working on a new project recently for a customer so i thought id share details as could be handy for others. I am planning to sell these kits once ready.

The basic principle was to use a pc emulated system in an original cabinet to save a cabinet missing some original parts. I also had to create a new JVS board to interface with the original cabinet wiring and the emulated system expecting a home console joystick or keyboard.

There were multiple challenges for this type of solution and at first i wasnt even sure it would be possible but perseverance pays off!

Another benefit of this type of system is that you can setup some factory looking systems with selection screens for running a few related titles in the cabinet to.

For this project the customer's cabinet was a King of Route 66 so the games installed were

- King of Route 66 (of course)
- 18 wheeler
- Crazy Taxi

The JVS side was a challenge for sure, but i managed to find a previous project avaialbe and then manufactured some fully populated pcbs with arduino controllers on them. Have 10 JVS pcbs here now so can make at least 10 kits to start with when ready.

Also spent quite awhile working out how to map all the control properly for the 3 games

So now it's working pretty nice, needs testing in the real cabinet of course but here are some pics. Still a few things to sort out but coming along nicely.

PC build is using some hardware i use alot for other systems and a reasonable graphics card, with enough power to run this stuff ok

Cost are:

£300 for the computer inc the graphics card, ssd and psu, and on a open frame case , plug in and go,
£100 for the JVS board, also plug in and go

Plus shipping.

The JVS board will be offered in 3 flavours:
1) driving games
2) gun games
3) regular joystick/button games

I will probably make some std game builds to go with these, but yes you can easily add other games and configure them, especially once its installed in the cabinet etc

Will you be doing anything similar for Sega Model 2 & 3 games?

Thanks, yes this is for keeping arcade originals going long term. I have some customers who still operate these old games and use them in events etc

Its just naomi /naomi2 currently.

I need to see whats about already for sega model 2 and 3. I dont think they are jvs though
 
I think there is already a solution for Model 2 and 3 Driving Cabinets out there using PC replacements to original wiring and FFB etc.
 
Nice work Jim. I also once looked into making up a JVS / Naomi commercial PC setup but put it to one side due to 'too many projects'. Glad to see you have yours up and running!

I did tackle the model 2 / 3 to PC interface a while ago and have one running in my Star Wars Trilogy with lights and joystick feedback. I'm just lacking the oomph to take it forward as a product so I'm weighing up the pros and cons of making it open source.

I'm using the Atmel AT90USB646 which is a very handy chip for these kind of interfaces. Did a Jamma to USB one along the same lines that I should really do something with!

Will it work with chihiro emulation? As the original jvs, and force feedback in a naomi cabinet works with the chihiro games from sega
 
Something I'd love for someone to make is a force feedback converter so that the chihiro games by namco(wangan midnight series) worked properly in the sega cabinets. I think one uses an ac motor, and the other a dc motor?
