Royal Rumble issues - first day of second pin

Hi all

Got my second pin today, a Data East WWF Royal Rumble. It's my first Data East game, and I wanted to list some snags/questions.

1. Can't turn volume up or down. On my Williams, you do this via the service buttons. My service buttons look a tad confusing AND there's a hole where another button may have once been. The menu navigate is extremely hard, perhaps because I'm missing that button. Can anyone confirm?

2. This is a 6 ball game, and there are 6 balls in the trough, but a seventh ball stuck on the playfield. This would he self explanatory except there is a switch right next to where this ball is blocked. I can't get it out, and if a ball is meant to go there, it won't fit through the gap anyway. Any ideas?

3. The seller told me the game sometimes doesn't boot correctly. As I write this, it's fine, but when I booted it initially, the sound was very erratic. It would keep repeating one sound (Vince shouted "it's time for the Data East WWF Royal Rumble"), sometimes cutting out halfway through, sometimes not, sometimes another sound would play. All connectors look good, does anyone know of an issue with DE games like this? I swear I read something similar about this game having a similar issue before.

Hiya, had a couple of data East games but not this one, but ... It may help...
1) look inside the front coin door on the left hand side, there may be a volume knob, or something to turn to control the volume
2) not familiar with the game, but it could be a captive ball on the playfield. It's a feature where you hit it, and a solid connection causes it to hit a switch somewhere else. The fun thing is the ball in play can fly off in any direction.
3) see how it goes, this can be due to the power board on the data Easts. If they get tired, they cause intermittent issues.

I've had a look at the coin door and I can't see anything relating to knobs/buttons other than in your pic. It's weird.

Thank you for the "stuck" ball explanation, that actually makes perfect sense and I feel stupid for asking!

No stupid questions in pinball. 👍

I didn't explain well, have a look on the left hand side of the body (inside). It's usually a potentiometer with a long knob (seriously)
 
Got it, right hand side and sticking up vertically! Thanks! I promise I'll read the manual tonight!

Rebooted and erratic again, may need to get this sent away for repair
 
First proper soldering I ever did was on a Star Wars Data East PSU . Much easier than I ever expected, but repair and replacing with good are also options.
 
I have a T2 and found a few bodges, and I quickly learned it's better to buy brand new assemblies and such rather than try and fix a bodge!

D/E games of that age had the electronics broadly based on the previous generation of Williams hardware, 'System 11'. The service buttons correspond to Williams 'Advance' (which became Enter for the Wpc system, as in T2) and 'Up/Automatic, Down/Manual', which latches into the On position. If it ever had a third button, that would have simply reset the Highest Scores to the stored back-up values.
 
Ok, so I can't scroll through the menu, I can only go one way. When I press two buttons at the same time, it backs out I think. Certainly more confusing than WPC.

You should be able to go forward or back through the options.
Read the manual - it explains it.
It is a little confusing at first but once you get you head around the system it’s straightforward.
If you try to just wing it pressing buttons willy nilly then you will get in a mess with it 😁
 
Got it. Worked it out and then looked at manual (I need to stop doing it in that order). You need to "enter" by pressing the Start button. All adjustments I wanted have been made. Perfect.

Now to get to the bottom of this random chaos (which hasn't happened since). Apparently there's a capacitor that is prone to going on DE's.
