Problem with Demo Man not launching balls etc

My son in law's game has started doing odd things (again), in that it is not seeing the balls in the trough. I'm assuming a problem with the opto receiver board as it looks like all the optos are lit on the emitter, however at the same time this appeared the flippers also are not responding and if a ball is placed in the shooter lane it will not launch. That switch is clicking if manually operated. It thinks it has started a game, but as a ball is not launched it should start looking for a stuck ball, but doesn't. All that happens is that the cryo claw swings back and forth, then repeats. Not sure where to look other than replace the receiver board. Any suggestions gratefully received, as I'm only at their place until Monday next week and hope to get sorted before we leave. Cheers, Graham

Check connections and fuses before changing boards. The manual will be online if you don’t have it to hand, this will point you in the right direction.

Have a good look at the CPU board in the back box, it's the one with the batteries on .
Check underneath the battery holder that they have not leaked onto the board. It sounds like you might have a acid damaged board.
Hopefully not but it does sound like that's what it could be.

Check:

1. Ribbon cables (remove and replace a few times)
2. Push in ASIC chip on CPU
3. Opto board (under playfield (NOT the trough board) is the likeliest culprit if 1 & 2 bear no fruit

Thanks for the replies guys, connection to emitter is good, connector to receiver has been bodged in the past with 1st cable soldered directly to the header pin, but will check the others. I did wonder about the ribbon cables but hesitated to move unless absolutely necessary. I know how much trouble they can cause! Will check suggestions later and report back. Thanks again.

If you also have no flipper s I suspect you have a 12v issue put in switch test and see if any thing happens when you press the buttons

Always start with the built in tests. Ascertain what the problem is. Run the solenoid tests, this will tell you if its a single solenoid, multiple solenoid, or power supply issue. EMpty the balls run the switch test, this will tell you if the trough optos are working properly. once you've gathered all the info, that will determine the next step.

Ok guys, red face time. Wretched F112 blown. I'm somewhat rusty with troubleshooting this era of games and on start up it said to check one flipper and the lower rebound. I'd expected it to also say check F-whichever but it didn't, so didn't look at it until this morning. Should have looked there first. Replaced it and all working so far, but no idea why it blew. Thanks for all the help and suggestions everyone, great as always on here.

Check with the manual that the correct fuse was in there too if you’ve changed like for like, easy to assume the correct one was being used but often isn’t the case 👍

Cheers Andy, will do. 👍 At least digging around I found a couple of other issues that needed sorting too. Think it had a hard life before they got the machine!
