Play field defects

Hi, can anyone tell me whether my nib stern star wars prem has defects in the play field or if I’m just paranoid. There is what seems to be joins in the artwork in areas of the lower half of the play field which I can catch my finger nail on if I run my finger over it . Is this normal as it slightly deflects the ball when it is travelling slow across the lines/ joins. It’s the line / join in the purple floor of the lane.

That looks like some mylar which has been stuck there to protect the playfield.

as above - it's a layer of thin plastic known as Mylar. It's there to protect the playfield in high impact or ball travel areas. This looks like the right in-lane, just below a ball drop. You'll probably find some of it up between the pop-bumpers too.

Do Stern put Mylar on a new play field and if they do, should it have a thick enough clear coat to leave the field smooth

Pretty standard to see this on any machine. I guess they put it on at the factory but I've never bought NIB

It's stuck on top of the clearcoat. Shouldn't affect ball travel in a noticeable way though (in particular here where it's in a lane anyway?)

The alternative is to have nothing, and the ball dropping from the wireframe will eventually crater the playfield.

They obviously put it on new Star Wars machines! Your playfield should be smooth, except for the edges of the Mylar, where it’s maybe a fraction of a millimetre higher. The Stern definition of smooth is not the same smooth as say the Hubble Space telescope mirror though, as an example. If you look too hard you might find it’s bowed left to right or top to bottom. The trick is not to care enough and just enjoy it. It’s a hard trick to learn though, especially given the cost.

I'm prepared for a kicking here but.....questionable build quality by Stern these days?
I don't Know if the same applies to other Stern machines or other manufacturers so I'm happy to accept enlightenment. If it doesn't affect gameplay or enjoyment then probably not an issue

Ok thanks, your comments at least stop me thinking I’ve been sold a refurb for the cost of a new one, guess I can live with not quite perfect after all what is these days.

Where did you buy this game? Stern’s quality control does have its critics. I’ve never bought new, so can’t say, but they’re a manufacturer and everything is about efficiency these days.

You might need to adjust the level of your pin if you are noticing the Mylar deflecting the ball, maybe you have put the back legs on the front for instance? Legs are the same length but the back legs usually have slightly longer screws in the feet and are set differently out of the box. My Aerosmith was anyhow (my one and probably only nib game)

I can't see that being a manafacturing defect. Mylar is on top of the clearcoat so you will always see an outline. Better to have mylar protecting those high traffic areas than unsightly wear appearing after a couple of years.
