Paint Colour Matching on R&B

Hi there,

I'm after a huge favour from anyone who happens to have a Data East Rocky & Bullwinkle in blue.

I'm going to rebuild my cab and respray it blue before fitting some new custom decals. Ideally i'd like to get the blue as close as possible to the original blue that was used on the US cabs.

So. Is there anyone out there who would be willing to assist me in finding a close match? Mine is currently black so I have nothing to compare against. Ideally I need to find a match which is generally available in the UK. The guy who sold me the decals used a pain which doesn't seem to be available in the UK. This one to be precise: http://www.olympic.com/color/paint-colors/cosmic-dust-b54-5

If there are any costs incurred from getting samples or anything then of course i'll be happy to reimburse them.

Grateful for any help that can be given.

Ta

Pete

Sounds like a possible option Rudi. I've decided to crack on and ordered the sanding pads I need.

I'll grab an orbital sander tomorrow and then the first job is to strip back the backbox ready for filling, priming and respraying. I can get the back box all done and redecalled before I worry about the main cab. It'll be good practice for the whole process.

I just Paul to pull his finger out and get his tutorial finished now..... ;-)

Nice :-)

Thanks for the picture Dave - that'll be a big help. The guy who made the decals has also now replied and said that I should be able to match it directly against the decal. The sky is a gradient fill but he said if I match the colour at the top then that's a close match to the original blue.

B&Q might be an option but what spec of paint am I looking for? I always understood automotive paints (from somewhere like Halfords) to be the best option to go for?

I found this handy website which allows you to match RGB colours against a variety of color swatches. It seems that RAL-based paints are commonly available in the UK so using that tool I managed to get this.

RALMatch.png

So it's provided me with 4 possibles which are 5012, 5015, 5024, and 5023. These map to the colour names 'Light Blue', 'Sky Blue', 'Pastel Blue' and 'Distant Blue'. So that's narrows it down a little.

I've also found a place online that can custom fill paint spray cans with RAL-based paints in a variety of types and gloss levels. They can even incorporate additives - flower scented R&B anyone?

Hopefully I won't need to go that route and the RAL colours I need will be available off the shelf.

What paint type is needed though? A brief scan on eBay shows up cellulose and acrylic paints. And finally is there any recommendation on the gloss level for the paint?

Thanks.

Hi Pete,

If you want to borrow a proper Ral chart or BS chart for paint colours, then ive got a few here on my desk that you can borrow. That way you can hold the chart up to the colour on your cabinet to get a better match. Ive had a look comparing the colours you have listed above on my screen to the colours in the book, and they look at bit out. As you'll know all monitors are different, and rarely calibrated unless you work in graphic design.

Are you going to spray it yourself at home, or roller it? do the new graphics cover all the paint anyway?

We use mainly acrylic paint here, and it gives a good durable finish as long as you leave it long enough to fully go off, which can be a few days depending on what it is, and how many coats have been applied.

I think you want more of a satin finish for the paint, as high gloss looks quite garish

Davey D?

That's not Mr Drury is it? ;-)

The decals have plenty of run-off so in theory the painted area shouldn't be visible. But, it's recommended that I spray at least the edges anyway because that way if there is anything visible then it will only be the blue paint and not bare wood.

The plan is to use spray cans and i'll be taking my sweet time over the entire task. I don't want to be rushing things as the aim is to make the job as tidy as possible.

I'd definately be interested in bollowing a RAL chart from you if possible. Many thanks for that kind offer. :)

Yes t'is I !!!!1! :D . I remembered your tag from when we used to play on XBL, and the location confirmed it ;)

If you like, you can grab it as you are passing by from work one day? your still on the docks i take it?

Just for info. B&Q can make you up a spray can after they scan your object colour.

Probably not the cheapest though.

Also rgb colours and pigment colours are two totally different beasts, they use different charts etc.
your monitor uses additive colour mixing (RGB)
Printed material uses subtractive colour mixing (CMY)

So getting the colour right on your monitor (even if perfectly calibrated) wont produce a useable colour for printing/painting.

what you need is a scribble pen.

Nice. I'll be honest I did quickly have a look for an RGB paint match but couldn't find one.

Also if you use gimp or similar color picker like I have in the picture you may get an even closer rgb color to what it's supposed to be just above the back leg. The picture has a fair bit of sunlight making it a bit brighter than what it actually is. Very minute values though , I wouldn't have thought anyone would be too bothered about that, it's close enough.

As luck would have it 'Davey D' (above) is actually an ex-colleague of mine and literally works just around the corner. I'm going to grab his RAL paint chart after work tomorrow so I can hold it up alongside the decal to check which of the proposed colours (if any) is the best match.

No real rush to get paint ordered as i've not even sanded the backbox down yet.
