Novel use for a Pinball Playfield

A guy local to me has managed to get his hands on a couple of old EM playfields which are in reasonable condition. Unfortunately they came without the main cabinet or back box so the likelihood of them ever running again is slim at best. Combine that with the amount of plastics and other bits that are missing and it makes it unrealistic to get them back in a working state.

Here's a couple of pictures of them. Apologies for the crap quality.

The guy who's got them actually makes furniture and he's looking at using these as a centerpiece for a couple of coffee tables. The idea being that there would be a glass top above them.

I figure there isn't much chance of getting them to do much more than light up but he's interested in the possibility of doing that. So the question for you lot is would it be possible to somehow get the GI and insert lights to come on? My guess is that you'd simply need a PSU of sufficient rating that could be hooked into the appropriate circuits.

If that's the case then has anyone got any clues on what voltage supply I would need?

Grateful for any comments. It's a little sad to see them in this state. They were about to be slung into a skip to be disposed of but I figure having them preserved inside a coffee table is probably a nicer ending for them.

Cheers

Pete

Easy resolution given to me by Lee Buck when i mentioned it to him a few years ago...... Christmas tree lights... Staple the wire to the back of the PF and have a light stapled pointing to the insert itself. Cheap, cheerful and easy :)

Sorry, I just re-read what you put and understand what you mean now. Just use Xmas lights under the playfield to illuminate the inserts.

NO!! (oops!)

Remove existing lights for inserts.... and use the xmas lights for these.

Will do the inserts though - and probably not the GI..

Aaah, ok.

My original plan about the transformer most likely wouldn't work thinking about it as it relies on the lighting matrix to deliver power at the relevent point in the game. So in actual fact they aren't connected in series so can't all be lit at once from a single supply.

Erm, or something....... ;)

Wouldn't be too difficult if you used a Flashing Xmas light set or a few withe various flashing setting that way you could install a few of the lights in certain areas to flash at one speed and install some from another set in other holes at a different flash rate ... And so on and so on .... Or get some clever person to make a flash sequence for the original loom on a few 555 chips ( I think ) been along time since I played with stuff from Tandy ..... Drop in some low watt LEDs around the playfied and boom.... Or what about some strip led multifunction colour changing jobbies with a remote, they are cool ... Like these http://bit.ly/11fXKmz
