OK so I had @PabloUK over today to help me sort a few errors on the NF I have for sale on the forum. First 2 problems were a doddle and the usual simple ones being a loose wire on a standup target and replace a micro switch on the drop target. That left the remaining fault which was the following:

Check Switch F8 U.L. Flipper But

Not only can we find that switch but after downloading the manual it says not used! Bear in mind we have checked every switch on the pin including all optos and they all fine.

so any thoughts of what it could be chaps and thanks in advance.

Hit start while in single switch test and you have this odd sw selected.

It'll tell you which pins on which header and also wire colour. You could physically trace it back to the pf from there.

Save you the hassle, I think it'll be an opto from the fliptronics board. A few games which didn't have an upper flipper used that spare opto channel to provide additional inputs.

Worth reseating the ribbon cable if it's unused and still complaining.

Could the error message be displayed because the unused switch was somehow triggered? If so it could be a fault on the switch line... ?

Clean flipper optos, if not fixed swap left and right flipper opto boards and see if it goes with the boards.

I would start with taking the left cabinet flipper opto board out giving it a good clean and inspect for any back repairs then trying back first, then as Phil says swap if still dodgy

Does NF have an upper left flipper?
I've seen games that don't have an upper flipper show an error for a not working upper flipper button. I have no idea why, it must be the opto board?

I'd love to know as why would the game rom even be seeing a non working switch that doesn't really exist?

As default they allow for 4 flippers and the upper flipper button may be used for user input when saving high scores or in video game mode.

All wpc games have 4 flipper optos 2 on each board regardless of whether the game uses them or not. Generic parts and all 4 flipper optos are always checked in the games ‘not seen’ switch check regardless to

Good to know! I just remember Greg's listing for his AFM saying it had an upper flipper opto error but It didn't cause any issues. So always wondered
