New to pinball, first pin Devil's Dare issues

Hi all,

I've been following this forum for a couple of years and finally an opportunity came up to grab myself a bargain "barnfind" pin - Devil's Dare!

It's in really good condition, a few scratches, missing chunks on the cabinet but the playfield only has very minor wear, so much so I've only stripped the playfield to give everything a good clean and to replace all the rubbers, bulbs etc..

I've also replaced all the boards with the equivalent from Pascal if available (I've kept the original boards for posterity!) so that's a PI-80, PI-FX and POP

With all of the above in mind, yesterday was the first time to actually try and turn it on and start debugging it, I really didn't expect it to work straight away!

The 2 issues I currently have are:
The P3 display is faulty (see pic), I've swapped the cable with the P1 display to rule out wiring issues. Is this terminal and will need a new display?

The other issue is with the sound, apart from a chime when I turn the machine on, there is no sound, even when doing the sound test. Looking at the PI-FX the "CPU" LED status is flashing quickly. Looking at the manual this says "One or more signals coming from the CPU, check the S1..S8 signals". What do I check?

Thanks for any help!
Rich

What an awesome find! Congratulations. Someone who can help will be along in a minute :P

Hi Andy

Yeah, in the sound test I get nothing..

If I press the "DEMO" button on the PI-FX it cycles through the sounds it has, I don't think they are game specific sounds.

I have a Volcano but am away from home at the mo. Is J6 the sound connector? Try re-seating it (or whichever the sound connector is)

Sys 80s are notorious for connector problems. Might be worth buying a crimper and a few hundred crimp contacts[emoji16]

Ok, one problem appears to be solved!

When reconnecting the P3 panel to its correct connector it appears to have fixed that problem, the display is a little dark but no longer corrupt!

Like I said , connectors[emoji16]

I was only half joking about replacing them.

Spoke too soon!

I was examining the connector on the PI-FX sound board (with the power off) and when I switched it back on the main F9 fuse blew!

Replaced that, turned it on again and now I have no displays at all.

The F3 fuse (and all the others) are fine

@Andy_B how can I replace the connector? I don't see how spade connectors would work with an edge connector or with the original connector on the display.

The display needed the electrolytic capacitor replacing, I'd replace it on all the displays to prevent it from happening again.

No displays tells me that the faulty display took out the fuse on the PI-80, you should have 1 spare fuse sent with the board. It's a small round (brown ?) thing. Either 100mA or 125mA depending on board issue https://www.flippp.fr/spare.php

I bought a bag of 10 from RS uk.rs-online.com

Great call on the fuse! Dead as a Dodo!

I've replaced it with the one(!) replacement I was sent with the PI-80 so before I power this badboy up again are there any steps I can take to stop the fuse going again?

I will get some ordered so I've got spares

I can only buy them by the 100 from RS-International or by the 500 from Conrad.ch! 🤣

I might buy them from Flipp - at €2 a pop they're expensive tho

I miss the ease of buying things in England!!

Did you mean C1/C2 or C3?

You could leave the offending display disconnected for now but if any other display capacitors are faulty then they will take out the fuse again.

Hi again!

Some forward progress and a big step backwards.. It took a while for the fuses for the Pi80 to arrive and I had to order more 2.5A T fuses as it kept blowing that but finally I managed to isolate a short on the diodes at the bottom of the cabinet.

Sadly, the 4 digit credit display slipped as I we reinstalling it and the nipple broke! Does anyone know where I can get a reasonably priced replacement or know of a suitable "modern" replacement? (I don't have enough "rep"to post a wanted thread) I also need a 7 digit too, it's functional but 1 leg of the digits has stopped working.

Whilst I'm waiting for the replacement displays, I'm off to figure out a machine gunning bumper!

Thanks!
Rich

It's not "rep" @DeWhal - for sale and wanted ads you have to donate to the site, not doing so and posting such things ends in a ban.

It's £10 and worth every, single, penny.

I saw that but couldn't find anywhere to make the donation.. Happy to donate to a good cause, loving this site!

I did see those but the shipping makes the first one v pricey and the 2nd, I've got a watch on but they include the boards too and I was hoping to just get the display and keep those boards available for others that needs the full unit.. Like I say, I've got a watch on the 4 digit so will make my mind up closer to the end time :hmm:
