If it's just for a one-off, use a small flat head screwdriver.
I bought an "affordable" (cheap) IDC tool similar to your top picture. Didn't last long!

This is a very old idc crimping tool, it bears the RS number 173-723 and is no longer available. The 0.1" pitch connectors are still available from Pancon, so if you can find a use for it then grab yourself a bargain. Check out my other items for sale, thanks for looking.

For a one off the edge of an old credit card works really well. You can push the wire in without damaging it. And best to use a thin credit card if you have a choice. Sometimes store cards or membership cards have a bit thinner plastic and these work best.
