Hey group

ive narrowed the fault on my taxi bell down to a bad capacitor. The legend didn't have any in stock so I went to maplin. Managed to get this one. The old value is 0.1uf 500v, the new one is 0.1uf 1250v. It looks totally different but was informed it would be ok to use.

Does anyone know if it will work ok before I put it in? If not does anyone have a spare I could have?

heres the pics:

As always any advice gratefully received.
Kind regards

As long as it's not electrolytic - hard to tell from the photo. The original is a ceramic disc capacitor, the replacement looks like a mylar one but it's only a spark supressor so should be OK. Has the original capacitor gone dead short?

Thanks mate. It is Mylar so should be fine. My mate is the electronics man!! In test mode with multimeter on, it was pulsing the voltages which would suggest there is no board fault and when he touched a wire on something, the bell rang, so know its not a coil or switch fault. Just leaves that capacitor. Apologies for my vagueness and terminology!!!
thanks

Yep, the capacitor you have is the correct rating so it will work. :thumb: The working voltage for the cap is 1250v so I guess it could take a lot more than a domestic premises can supply, that's for sure! :scared:

Re. the working voltage, it's higher than the original so it's fine. As for domestic supplies not being anywhere near that volatage, that's very true, but the back emf from a 50 - 70v flipper coil will be thousands of volts, for a split second, and hence the requirement for diodes and supression capacitors in the first place.

Thanks Peter. Can't wait to get that bell ringing again:-)

Your saying that now.
Once fixed and that bell is going off every two minuets , either little kenny is going to be waking up or your mrs is going to rip the thing out of the machine cause it will drive her nuts.
I quite like it but it sounds like there is someone at the door.

Too true - when I took Taxi in the house for the league meeting last week, someone else was playing it in another room, the bell goes off & I jumped to go & answer the door...even though my door-bell "ding-dongs" and doesn't ring!

There is a setting in the menus to turn the bell off - I set it off when I had a Gameshow in the house all the time...pop-bumpers, slings & flippers etc everyone in the house is ok with...a ringing bell...that's a different matter :)

Regards,
Dan.

Ha ha, I've never had the bell working so I'm still keen! Might be muting it after the first game though.
