Was having an epic first ball cradling 3 balls, had to move one ball off and flipper was stuck up. Was cradling for quite a while so guess I’ve blown the transistor?
Coil was red hot and stinking.
Do I need to put a new coil in as well as the transistor?
Is this the beefier transistor I need here https://pinparts.co.uk/products/24nf10-100v-26a-n-channel-mosfet was looking for IRL540N as mentioned somewhere that was the one to put in.
Will put one in for the other flipper while it’s out. Looks like the original transistors are in there.
Thanks.

Wasn't overheating flippers a problem for LOTR when first released?

I think I remember some sort of coil heatsink being available as a solution.

I’ve got the LE version so think it’s different, not sure though. Transistors are crap on the board apparently.

Also, when powered on the flipper goes straight on then drops when powered off.

IRL540 sorted mine. i’d not replace any others unless you need to.

to replace cut off the old one before desoldering the legs. they are folded over on the solderside so a bit nasty to get off if you don’t cut it off first.

Thanks will do, thanks for the tip👍 Have a desoldering station and a soldering station so about time I used them!
Did you change your coil as well?

No the coil had got very hot but it was fine once transistor changed. it’s been good ever since.

I would check the coil first before you switch it back on if it’s damaged it will blow the transistor the moment you energise it or just change it anyway for the sake of what they cost
Those transitors are a pain with them been hooked over at the back if you have an old board have a play at removing some parts first if it’s your first attempt you don’t want to remove the pads and have to jumper them as it looks a right pigs ear then

Coil is showing 3.6 ohms but I had to push the lugs to get a reading then was ok, stinking but not burnt looking.
Fuse didn’t blow, somebody put a 5a fuse in there. Great!
Looks like Q15 has been changed before as its the only one without a red marking on the metal.
I just hope the tracks etc are ok when I take the board out.

If the coil was stinking then that is due to the laquer that insulates the copper wire beginning to melt, meaning the insulation is broken down. You shouldn’t trust this coil.
