Does anyone have any experience of this technology ?
I'm toying with the idea of installing a largish surface, say 3m x 2m and have noticed you can import modules from China with seemingly all the bits.

Obviously quite a few options and quite a few risks - any thoughts ?

Thank you
Julian

I have installed a few systems in venues for people. Yes they do look good - but they are also pretty delicate panels.
Are you making the worlds largest pin2dmd panel ? :)

Joking apart I have seen plenty of pixel failures which do not matter on a stage behind a band. They also are not water proof if you are putting them outside.

Interesting ; thanks Phil - do you think it's mature technology; I was thinking it probably was. I'm imagining permanent non transparent on an indoor wall.
What resolution have you used ?

You can get company's who will send you a complete unit (say what resolution / pixel spacing you want) or you can buy all the bits your self, Usually on these large scale video walls, you just have loads of modules daisy chained via ribbon cables and a few PSU's to power them then they have a special controller hard which usually has a hdmi/vga input which you plug into your pc graphics card and it just behaves as a big monitor. They are pretty basic as in all the components you need. But as Phill said the modules are extremely delicate and pixels can get damaged especially on the edges if they are knocked etc.. You can get all types of resolutions from 1mm to say 10mm, if your gonna be close and depending what you want to display on it (live video?) you probably dont want to go any bigger then P3 or will look low res / pixelated.

I had a quote for about 8K dollars for a 3 x 2m front access indoor P2.5 from someone who has stock in Netherlands.
It appears there are front and rear access variants and static module housing systems vs more robust hire housings.

I've asked them to send a sample pack of one of each bit, apart from video controller.

Depending on how handy with electronics you are, you could build it far far cheaper than that.

Intriguing; where would you save the cost - after googling for a few days, it seems to me they're built out of interlocking frames populated with led modules, daisy chained with networks cables back to a video controller.

Savings would be if you ordered the parts your self and built it, would end up far cheaper then 8k :)

Yes that's basically it, you need a metal frame with mounting holes for probably the 64x64 P2.5 modules, then a whole bunch of the modules which are dasiy chained via 2x8 ribbon cables. (these cables come with the modules) Then a whole bunch of 5v PSU's (the power cables also come with the modules) then there is 2 control cards one is the module driver and you plug all the various chains into this, then this plugs into another card via a short Ethernet cable then the HDMI from pc plugs into that second card, And that's pretty much all they are.

But all depends if you just want to buy it and have it pre built no hassle job done or build your self which would be cheaper option.

The quotes (I had another very similar) are from chinese manufacturers which is just all the bits, so I'm going to need to mount and string together.

buy plenty of spare panels. They do differ quite a bit. I tried to repair pin2dmds and found that I could not just replace one half as they look different colour wise.

Also run them at 70/80% brightness.

Use decent power supplies.

I would wait abit longer if I was going to buy a video wall.

Correct, the modules are made in a huge batches of what ever batch of led is available at the time and they NEVER EVER match between batches. I have same problem with a similar product if just one led goes bad you gotta replace ALL the panels so the colours match again, total nightmare.

That's worth knowing - thanks Phil.
