ColorDMD X-LED Preview!

ColorDMD is excited to preview the new ColorDMD X-LED this week at the Texas Pinball Festival!

The X-LED is designed to extend full multicolor support to 192x64 DMD games including Baywatch, Frankenstein, Batman Forever, and Maverick. The X-LED utilizes the same ColorDMD Chroma controller board used in current LED products, and leverages ColorDMD's extensive colorization technology for a complete, large-format, full-color experience.

The TPF preview will appear at the ColorDMD booth, and feature Eric Priepke's astounding work on BAYWATCH! Baywatch is an iconic game that includes challenging full-motion video, video modes, and dynamic animation sequences that change based on gameplay. Eric has colored them all, and it's like nothing you've seen! If you're a fan of large format DMD games, this is an exciting preview you won't want to miss.

ColorDMD extends our sincere thanks to Mark Brown for sharing his game at TPF!

A limited pilot run of X-LED displays is in production now, targeting Spring 2018 release. On release, ColorDMD X-LED will support for both the Baywatch and SIGMA (single-color) ROMs. The SIGMA ROM allows custom selection from 97 different static colors, and also supports dynamic color variation using an external RGB controller.

Displays from the pilot run have been priced at $469, and will be available exclusively from ColorDMD. We will provide further updates and product information in the upcoming weeks.

Will this support v4.01 (Chad's) code? I'm not sure if that includes extra DMD work.

Can't confirm at the moment - I would hope so - the Chad code has been available whilst the guy has been working on colouring it. And they did an update for Tommy to ensure compatibility with Chad code.

I think the only bit of extra animation added is a longer sequence at the start of Ironman ?? But I'm not 100% on this. It may be the same - I still haven't explored the new code properly as my game is out on loan.

Had a few weeks off and I come back to this?

Love it. Somehow the colour still looks suitably retro compared to some of the alternatives.

I’m not sure I can swallow over £400 though.

It already looks 100x better than the alternatives.

Twice the price, twice the quality.

This looks pretty awesome. I wish I had a Baywatch, despite it's cost it looks like almost a must have mod. Baywatch is probably Sega's best game imo with honourable mentions to Apollo 13 and Goldeneye.

I'd throw Starship Troopers into that mix. That game is just full on fun

A guy on Pinside recently summed up his take on Baywatch - see below. I totally agree, except I think the theme is a killer ..but I can see how it turns people off

BAYWATCH:
While personally the theme blows me away by how bad it is, the gameplay and table design blows me away by how good it is. That is Baywatch in a nutshell.
Baywatch has easily one of the most interesting and shot filled playfield designs of the 1990's, rivaling anything that Bally/Williams had put out during this time. In fact, it honestly is one of the finest shooting and coolest playfields I've played. So what's the catch? The theme.
If you can get past the theme, the gameplay and playfield layout is superb. The multiball is just too much fun, but the modes are well executed as well, with excellent dot work and challenging gameplay. While there are only 5 modes to start, it is not easy to survive past them and to it's wizard mode ''Earthquake'' which is a lot of fun. Some of the sounds too, are excellent in this pin, like the ocean bells dinging off in the pops, to the thunderous slingshots, to the almost casino like sounding jackpots. The ramps work and feel excellent in Baywatch, and your shots are well spread around the playfield. You never seem to not have something to shoot for. There are two video modes as well.

Pros: One of the most interesting and well laid out playfields of the 1990's. Really fun shooting pin, with plenty of challenge and great dot matrix work.

Difficulty to Wizard mode: 7.5
Playfield design: 9.5
Push start again? 9.0

Cons: The theme. That's pretty much it.

Wish I had bought a mint Baywatch for £850 a few years ago as loving this new screen......

We're just one day away the Texas Pinball Festival and our preview for Baywatch on the new ColorDMD X-LED display! With the higher resolution, large format display there's a lot to see!

Of course, all the things you've come to expect from ColorDMD will be there... full color video modes, full motion capture beauties, and hard-to-color dynamic modes where multiple animation elements change based on gameplay... trapped diver, chopper rescue, shark flip, and more. But Eric Priepke's added one special feature that's never been seen on any ColorDMD before... full color animated scoring!

Watch waves crash and the sun's reflection dynamically ripple on the water, while fully colorized helicopters, boats, sharks, and jetskiiers move between and behind embossed score digits that change with each switch hit. It's absolutely stunning!

Baywatch will be set up throughout the weekend in the ColorDMD booth at TPF! Find us along the back wall near the large Marco booth. Don't miss it!

Surely there isn't any technical reason why this couldn't be released on a standard LCD ColorDMD? The screens should be big enough to accomdate the extra height anyway.

Limited run by the looks

I've been tentatively looking for one for a while. Just rarely see a nice one up for sale
