Another day, another pin to fix.

A nice gentleman has sent me his beloved Johnny Mnemonic for a 'no compromise' restoration of the playfield and electronics. I've been asked to "do my thing" and make it as nice as possible. So here goes...

Upon it's arrival, the first thing I noticed was just how stunning the cabinet is. This seems to be a brand new cab and it's been done to a very high standard. Not sure who is responsible for it, but as you can see it's rather nice:

All black inside:

So new, it doesn't have lamps in the back board yet:

The playfield is in excellent condition, although it does need a full strip and clean, but it's so nice having something good to begin with.

The electronics. Looks nice and clean. There's a new DMD controller board but everything else is standard. Old roms need updating and there's a few problems which I think are being caused by bad connectors, cold solder joints, and broken ribbon cables.

Here's one such example of crappy connectors, which were causing problems with the GI not functioning correctly. Easily fixed.

At the first glance, the underside of the playfield isn't too shabby, although it does need a clean and every mech will be taken apart and rebuilt. On close inspection, the most annoying problem I have to face is that some tool has sprayed oil into ALL of the coils. Lucky I got it at this stage before it ended up in too much of a mess:

No coin door! No worries, a brand new one will be going in here:

Here's what a brand new coin door looks like:

And the flip side, with working coin mech:

Now installed, and looking sweet:

Out comes the playfield, into my workshop, ready to be stripped. The bottom end:

Top end:

So many wires. Not looking forward to doing the hand mech at the back:

Stripping:

More stripping:

And now I can see what we're dealing with. It's only lightly mucky:

Commence operation elbow grease...

My secret sauce is working it's magic and after some considerable buffing, I'm starting to get a nice shine:
farm1.staticflickr.com_722_23142315162_54f76c8ff4_c.jpg

Flipped over, and now starting to work on the underside stuff:
farm1.staticflickr.com_695_23301725061_58723d478d_c.jpg

Flipper mechs cleaned and full rebuild kit installed, along with new bushings:
farm6.staticflickr.com_5653_23016347919_2e3f591050_c.jpg

Not sure if you can see in this photo, but ALL of the lamp boards have cracked cold solder joints on the connectors. Going through each one and resoldering:

A gazillion little cable ties later and the wiring harness is starting to look a bit neater:
farm6.staticflickr.com_5690_23092507509_2d93248bde_c.jpg

Flip over again and I'm starting to rebuild the playfield. All of the ball guides have been regrained to remove ball trails. Pop bumpers cleaned and rebuilt with new sleeves, skirts, and highly polished rings - all of the usual stuff as shown in my other shop logs:
farm1.staticflickr.com_718_23275879852_bccc61bb9d_c.jpg

One thing I didn't get a photo of was the wood rails along the playfield. Those were sanded and repainted. It's coming along nicely. New black flipper bats installed with purple superbands :)
farm1.staticflickr.com_715_23016335309_e5ef8f5d22_c.jpg

Stripping the hand mech and matrix was the worst job ever, but it's done and reinstalled:
farm6.staticflickr.com_5757_23164669390_6745f28f5f_c.jpg

Crazy bobs hole protector has been installed and we have nice new BLUE post rubbers:
farm6.staticflickr.com_5710_23434299386_5457aeb093_c.jpg

Not going to rebuild any further until the LED's are in and working correctly. So I've put the playfield is back in the cab now, and working on LEDs. My customer spec'd premium quality LED's, so I've gone for Super bright Noflix PLUS on all of the feature lights AND the GI circuits - these will proved important in this game since the GI has dimming. Around the pop bumper area, I've gone for TEAL coloured LED's as opposed to green, which better suit the colours in that area:

To be continued...

And that's a wrap!

I have another Johnny Mnemonic in the queue which needs the full works. That'll be a more detailed shop log.

Enjoy some pics:

It's a Manny cab Pete

Yeh, Manny posted a pic on his facebook of it; he did the main cab- makes me quite fancy a JM seeing one looking as nice as this...

Someone must really like this game, don't suppose he fancies selling it?

I almost posted about it being a Manny cab but couldn't see any branding, so thought maybe not. Impressive what he's done to it though, the underside is so clean it looks like all new wood.

Haha unlikely. I do have my own JM which will be for sale once it's fixed up.

very nice! looks super mint!

Hope there is now a lock on that back box to stop it folding forward! haha!

Dunc

Thanks mate!

No it still doesn't have a back box latch. I didn't do the cabinet so it was probably left like that for a reason.
