Help - My controlled lamps are not working!

Hi guys,

The kids were playing my Rocky & Bullwinkle today when all of a sudden the playfield lamps stopped working, leaving just the GI.

Also, at the same time the machine stopped accepting coins (I keep them coin operated).

I had a quick google and saw fuse F2 might be the culprit and sure enough, I checked and that fuse was blown. I checked and it was the right value (5a SB) so I replaced it with another 5a SB and switched on and hey presto, the lamps are working again and once again it accepts coins.

I was just putting my tools away feeling very pleased with myself, but when I next switched it on the problem has come back - but this time fuse F2 is not blown!

Could anyone point me in the right direction of what to check next, as it has become the kids favourite machine and I'm hoping I can get it going again quite quickly :)

If I put it on Freeplay you can still play a game and everything else seems to work fine (flashers, GI, display, flippers etc) but obviously without the playfield controlled lamps it is not the same.

Thanks again,

Mark

Right, that's odd. After enjoying a lovely Sunday roast and a couple of pints of Banks's I've switched Rocky & Bullwinkle back on again, and amazingly the playfield lamps are now working again! (and it is also accepting coins again!).

Does this mean I have an intermittent problem, or could it be a one-off glitch? If anyone could let me know if there is anything I should be checking it would be muchj appreciated. This is my 3rd R&B and this one I am planning to be a keeper so I don't mind spending some time and money to get it just right ;).

Cheers, Mark.

From the 'bible' .......

The most common CPU Controlled Lamp Problem.
The most common controlled lamp problem occurs when the fuse blows (with the blue/white wires) that connects to the large 30,000 mfd capacitor and the bridge in the backbox. If this happens, ALL the CPU controlled lamps will not work! Check these three components for problems which would cause this fuse to fail.

Thanks guys, no battery damage as far as I can see so I dont think that is a problem - was worth checking though.
Thanks Grizz, very useful - it is working again now so hopefully it was a one off, but in case either the capacitor or bridge are at fault, does anyone know how/if I could text them?

Cheers, Mark.

I'd reflow the revelant header pins first before looking at caps or bridges, just to rule out the possibility of hairline cracks.

Put your meter across the cap on dc setting and look for 20v or so. If present, then fuse , bridge and cap are likely ok. If not, prob blown fuse.

Thanks guys, will give a try and let you know how I get on. Cheers, Mark
