Hopefully having a small games room created in the early new year and wondered what is the best flooring to use?
The initial floor will be insulation with a screed over the top, but then can’t decide on the finish.

What are people using, and what are the pro and cons of each?

Don't use 'soft' carpet. The feet can't move and you can't nudge. It's amazing how much lower scores are of you can't nudge.

Carpet Tiles is what I used after thinking about it a lot. I didn't want a hard floor because moving games in and out ultimately messes it up no matter how careful you are. Carpet for my room was difficult to find something that would fit well just because of the size of it and if you have to deal with replacing anything it could be pricey...

Agreed, and also don't use too thick a pile carpet otherwise its hard to get the machines level/stable.

I went for industrial office carpet tiles, not that more expensive compared to rolled carpet and you can replace them easily if they get messed up. I got mine from:

I liked the thought of carpet tiles, we use them in our offices and are very good and hard wearing.
The wife on the other hand isn't happy about them at all.
I may have to try and pursuade her.

I have had both mid-pile carpet and tile. Carpet is more comfortable of course. I did have some trouble keeping machines level, and if you use sliders, which protects the carpet, some of my guests quickly figured out they could move the tables around too easily. I soon tightened all of my tilts to keep things in order.

I like our tile now (which would be the equal to hardwood I suppose) . It is much easier to keep things clean when all of the little minions on the street come over and play the games. The only con to the tile is that even the best tile layer will have some discreet variance in height and you will inevitably have situations where a game is right on a grout line and if it gets nudged on the higher or lower tile than what it was originally leveled on, the game can get out of whack. Hardwood would not be subjected to that of course.

Best of luck with whatever you come up with. There are pros and cons to each. I would just go with whatever you like the looks of the most.

Carpet tiles are a good choice. But in my opinion ecotile pvc tiles are better, but more expensive....

Pros:
Look good
Robust _ used in factories and commercial gyms
Slip resistant
Easy to clean/ mop/ vacuum
Thermal insulation
Acoustic insulation
Very easy to fit (jigsaw to cut them)
Very easy to replace should you need to
Softer underfoot than ceramic tiles

Only downside is the cost

I went to a second hand store and bought a giant used roll of carpet for around £80 that we just cut down to fit the space. Been down for...probably going on four years now and never had an issue apart from wanting the occasional hoovering. Must have been the right sort of carpet though because I can nudge the games no problem :p

I also went the carpet tiles, second hand ones off eBay they were ex casino tiles, go for the larger size ones.
I think mine were 900 x 900 cost about £2 or £3 per tile a few years back.

I used carpet tiles - My colours are many and varied due to it was the odds and ends from a flooring company so I got them for a fraction of the cost of new. Luckily I used darker colours and sold off all the bright colours. As someone else said the 900 X 900 are better as they cover a large area quickly.

Amtico or Karndean for me. Use the plastic furniture cup holders with felt bottoms under each leg of each pin. Very easy to slide pins around the room.

Very slidy for nudging though - I had that in my games room with a wooden floor. For the pinroom I have carpet, with a bit of pile and rubber feet. Nudging no problem and the machine angle hasn't been an issue. Very luxurious underfoot and I like that.

Not sure I would have chosen it but demanded by the wife. Still, she was ok when I built a room and added just shy of 20 pins so I can live with that compromise.

Carpet tile would have been my preferred option, with rubber feet.

I have that in my pool room and the thing to watch out for is if you get any kind of crap (metal dust/shavings from the pins for example) on the cup holder and then you move the game the metal dust will put horrible marks in the flooring. I'd have preferred wood flooring also but just so easy to ruin it if your ham fisted like me :D

Neil.
