I drove 340 miles each way recently to pick this up and promised my mrs fish and chips when we got there as it was on the east coast, we ended up having a petrol station sandwich and my dog wasn’t too pleased with the space she had being that this pin is a super wide body! There goes a Saturday.

Fully working with original boards, playfield not too bad but will fit a playfield protector because of the cupped inserts, just fitted some to my BK for the same reason and very happy.
Backbox is really nice with a perfect glass.

Cabinet is solid with a bit of filling needed to the front right leg area so will use some filler with fibreglass strands in and some screws for grip, came off when we slid it in the car so must have been coming away anyway.

Have the stencil kit here so will be repainting it after a sand down and prep, that’s going to be fun. Need to order paint.

The side trims had a couple of dings but I wanted to reuse them as I have bought new WPC trims in the past and prefer originals so was careful taking them off, managed to get them off without further damage and knocked out the dents that were already there, not perfect but good enough.

Cabinet stripped and ready for sanding, I’m not doing the inside. Want it looking tidy but not mint, bit of history in there with a smell


Not sure when I’m sanding as I nearly chopped my little finger off peeling potatoes yesterday and want it to heal before the vibrations begin
About to chop onions for a curry very slowly

Decided to do a bit of sanding, nice and smooth. Few low spots on the left and back which can be seen by the white paint that is left.
Next the backbox.
Will order some paint and get it primed up next.
Also cleaned the inside which looks good enough and much better.

Aching a bit today so a bit of ’light’ backglass work, the prism effect card had dropped and was stuck in the wrong position and over the display window.
I thought it was just a plain piece of clear plastic as couldn’t see any effect so managed to find something similar and ordered it, then later realised it did have the prism effect, doh!
So if anyone is missing this I should have a couple of sheets spare here soon.

Hairdryer out and gently peeled it off without any damage, horrible job.
Put it back on in the correct position, happy days.
Maybe backbox strip tomorrow

Nothing exciting, all sanding/stripping done and some filler. Some guy parks up outside asking if it’s ok to as it says to park there in a walking guide (outside my house) just as I had mixed up some filler Told him it was a bit cheeky in that guide as residential here but crack on as quiet at the moment, managed a few scrapes then too hard

Filled the leg corner with filler with fibreglass strands in and put a few screws in first for hold, just needs a bit of light filling to smooth.

Paint should be here by tomorrow

It’s crazy how that filler appears to have filled in and then when it sets and you sand it off you see a lot of smaller flaws/gaps in it. drives me nuts.

Glad you said that, it’s been a long time since I last did any bodywork style filling. Was on Rover p6’s and Cortina’s I think

Ive started using some green extra fine filler for the final fill. Mind you it aint cheap!

I have some of that Ronseal wood filler here so trying that then will prime over it, will see how smooth the paint goes on it as not done this before on a pin.
Im using Rust-oleum cans so see how that goes Even bought some gold paint for the dotted effect, could be a disaster though‍

The cab is seriously smooth but once the grey primer is on I will spray some black on and rub down to see if there are any low spots I have missed.

Enjoying this but the weather is nice for a change and helps massively.

Just did a quick bit of priming and learned it’s going to need more than I planned for due to the wood soaking it up, also the narrow spray pattern from the Rust-oleum can is annoying, trying to do the overlap spraying technique is hard on a large surface with a narrow spray pattern and that was only the back. Cab side will be interesting.
Front right lower cab corner repair looks pretty good though.

Will sand after first coat of primer and hopefully look ok after the second coat and a sand

Ordered some nozzles from a couple of places, hopefully they will fit otherwise I will just have to try harder

With a bit of luck I will get the knack, at the of end of ‘79 billboard top 100 this was top!

I had to look it up and the story goes he wrote the song about a high school girl (17) that he saw in a clothes shop when he was in there with his girlfriend, he was 8 years older so about 25 and said he wrote the song as a 14 year old - yeah right

Did some priming today, piece of cake with these new high output wide nozzles. Uses probably 50-75% less paint for coverage and took no time.
These work with Rust-oleum mode primer, not sure about gloss yet

HVLP Style nozzles. High Flow, Super Wide Fan

Superb for covering large areas from an aerosol. Similar in use to a LVLP (Low Volume Low Pressure) spray gun.

Can see some parts that need a bit of filler now it’s all covered so will do that once it’s dried, sand down then another coat of primer - sand again then gloss time.

I was practicing the splatter dot effect and have that down it seems but have concerns about the stencil kit pulling it off, can it do that?

Now it’s looking really clean I think I will have to do the inside too, upper part.

Finished the prep for the backbox, gloss white Monday and gold splatter dots. Decided to do the top part inside cab so just put some primer on that but will need one more coat.
Sand and another coat of primer on cab which I will do Monday first and a day at least to dry before white gloss goes on.
Getting close now for the cabinet to be finished.

Bit more filling this morning then rub down and wipe with tack cloths, put a decent amount of primer on and hoping it’s enough as only one can left.
Im way too fussy and can see every scratch/mark so have told myself that’s enough no more filling otherwise I will be here forever!

Hopefully in the next update it will be gloss white with gold speckles but I’m going to have to do a test to see if the stencil pulls the gold speckles up, don’t want to find out that it does when actually putting the stencils on.

Also ordered a playfield protector seeing as it worked so well on my Black knight with cupped inserts and plays really fast now.

Sprayed white gloss on the cab this morning, 2nd from last pass on lower front side of cab spray can hit saw horse so slowed it down and caused a slight run dabbed it off so will have to see what can be done when dry, probably should have left and tried to sand down when dry. Might have to fix and re gloss the whole side if I can’t localise it

Went to the local cash & carry to cheer myself up from the drip and picked up a 10 gallon keg of Stella, they don’t drink much in these parts


Prepared the backbox for its top coat of gloss, flat and wipe. Just 2 coats the cab had 3. Looking good but if/when I do another I’m going to try a different way to prep as this takes too much time, paint and should have a better finish if it works. But I will need another to try it on!
Let this lot dry until maybe next week now as busy with other things, but I might sneak in the gold speckles in between if they stick good and fiat.

I don’t know but I couldn’t see any on the purple on my original and maybe there was some on the red, I watched that nutter captnretro do one and he put the gold speckles on his after the white coat. If they go on last that would be great as I think the stencils might pull it off.
All the pictures I have looked at it seems to be only on the white, so I’m not sure but it would probably look better all over anyway and take your eye off any surfaces that are not perfect.

This got me thinking, I Bally "splattered" my cab before the art, but I don't know if that was right!

Splatter last definitely. Stops uneven paint surfaces for stencils and avoids shading….. (also if you splatter to large/ thick you can wipe off)…. Think splatter instructions were included in the Dolly Parton restoration thread. Cannot remember. Anyway. Splatter last unless of course you only want splatter on the base white, which some do. Most original paint is this way , but it makes stencilling a bit more tricky to get right.

Thanks for that, I was thinking stencilling over it would cause issues like pulling the splatter off plus other stuff I don’t even know about yet.
I made a little tool up to do it, metal bristles from a moss broom

Ignore the larger splatters as I just needed to shake more paint off to keep it small, quite watered down to lay flat.

Got over my sulking so sanded the side of the cab and smoothed where the run was, no way to do a local repair and not see it

Gave that a couple of more coats of gloss and another on the back of the backbox as noticed it was a bit stripey.
