I replaced a couple of duff opto's on the button boards, and all now works better than it did, except I'm not sure that the opto's I got were the special high gain ones. (measures 3v where Marvin claims it should be below 1v)

Did some more searching and found a site that recommends replacing the 1k pullup resistors on the fliptronics board with 10k instead to allow you to use normal opto's

anyone done this ?

any down side to the change ?

Found this thread whilst searching for an issue to a problem on this DW I'm fixing... The flipper button opto for the U.L. flipper has stopped working. Put that little board on the bench and it looks like the opto was previously replaced with a TCST-1103 which is incorrect.

I see that marco have the proper QVE11233.0086 part in stock, but curious to know if changing the pull-up resistor as suggested above is a viable alternative?

if there is an upper flipper only on one side you can swap the boards left to right.
Why didn't I think of that? Indeed that has fixed the problem! Thanks :)

Still kind of curious about the whole thing - I found some useful information on this forum:
The QVE11233 with the suffix 086 is a special sensitive type, that was specially manufactured for Williams. It?s now nearly impossible, to get it for a reasonable price.

There is a solution in a pinch, but you most open the opto and replace the photodiode and the phototransistor (of course a special-type with the same values as in the original QVE11233.086. I have done that a few years ago and it worked. At this moment, i do not remember the part number of this phototransistor, but i will invesigate.

Even, if you replace the original optos by new QVE11233.086 optos, it is only a question of time, until these new optos will fail again. The reason ist, that the original clock-board has a design fault, the optos are driven out of spec and the heat in the clock produced by the original bulbs is the next problem.

Looks like the recommended replacement (as on marco's site) is OPB804, but that's out of stock at the usual suspects (mouser, digikey, etc.)

Anyway, this game is sorted for now so I'm not touching anything until it breaks again :D
