Well it might be a long time for many of us till we get back to regular league meets and events, so I have been thinking about the possibility of doing some sort of competition that anyone can participate in from their home, using their own pinball machine(s) – while they are socially distancing themselves and even if they are self isolating.

I am sure there are better solutions, but this is the best I have come up with: A home super selfie high score competition

Here's how it works: you can enter by playing any machine you have access to as many times as you like in one session, or one day, or whatever, and posting your best score by sending a photo of the score. (You can make it a selfie if you like but it will be obvious who you are from your post - unless you are posting for a spouse, son, daughter, etc). The machine would have to be set to three balls and no extra balls, and awards for specials etc set to credits not extra balls or points.

Also, you can enter as many times as you like, so you can improve on your previously posted scores

In effect if you have an Addams, for example, then you are only competing with other people here with an Addams. Obviously if you have some weird machine that no-one else has then you are out of luck, but there are plenty of popular machines that multiple members of this forum own.

And yes obviously all machines are different, on some machines certain shorts are unmakeable (perhaps this might spur you to do a flipper rebuild or level the machine). And yes people can cheat by taking the glass off or setting the machine to five balls and lots of extra balls or making the slope very shallow, but if they do then they are a NOBHEAD, because after all this is just for fun to while away the next few weeks and months.

There are no WPPR points for this event

So… if you are up for it then post your high scores from today and I will collate a leader board for each machine in the fist post on this thread and update it regularly. No need to be shy: if you make a crap score then you can always blame it on the poor state of your machine! In fact I'll even post the lowest scores for a competed game as well, and I'll award some cheap and nasty prizes, perhaps from the TPF grab bag.

One more thing... I am sure that the collective hive mind of Pinball Info can come up with something better than this, so let's hear any suggestions if you have any. For example maybe it's possible to baseline a machine by taking an average of say ten games on that machine, and then normalising these scores to that you measure who beats the average score for a particular machine by the biggest margin, or some other statistical method, to produce a winner? But for now let's keep it simple. I'll be posting some of my scores this evening…

Great idea Paul 👏🏼
It reminds me of when Matt held the selfie league one year instead of the usual London pinball league.
I have had 3 games of each of my chosen games, set to competition mode, 3 ball, fairly tight tilt with 5 second ball save.

ACDC Premium
1st game : 39 889 000
2nd : 26 531 390
3rd : 164 405 550

Tron Pro
1st game : 9 150 780
2nd : 11 715 880
3rd : 49 280 350

funny there seems to be a pattern that my 3rd game is the best 😁

Great score on Dialed in.

I've had a few games last night in lieu of going to Special When Lit, my usual Friday night haunt and this afternoon.

Started off with plan to play one game on each machine last night. All my games are set to 4 balls no extras so taking the score after ball 3 and then able to continue if I was on a good score for my own satisfaction.

Started off so so (JP 277, IM 81, GOTG 134, Kiss 174) and then went downhill rapidly so gave up as not as much fun without the social side of the Friday night which really missed. As you can see had a bit of a disaster on the 3 B/W classics!

Did a bit better today so far on the 3 Sterns. Will try a bit more later this eve if have time.

So my best 3 ball scores so far as follows with number of games played:

JPS 277,174,050 2
IM 464,649,050 2
GOTG 563,557,740 2
Kiss S 174,244,380 1
MM 14,305,170 1
AFM 310,877,740 1
MB 7,500,000 Est 1 (pic didn't work)
DH 403,993,820 1
Met 51,103,440 1
ST S - 0
GOT - 0
SM - 0
XM - 0
Cor - 0
I500 - 0

I could put this into match play and use the submit scores mode if anything thought that was worth it?

Would a Zoom Video Conference ("VC") virtual tournament work?
Have to all be at the same time with 'channels' (separate VCs) for individual machines, i.e. a VC for ACDC, a VC for Dialed In etc, then over the space of a few days we can compete say on 4 or 5 different machines....

Sounds interesting but I am not really sure what this would mean in practice. I am quite happy to update the leaderboards in post 1 throughout the day so it may not be worth your effort unless there are any major benefits?

I have been really inpressed with Zoom VC over the last few days when I have done a few virtual get togethers. I'd be up for something like this if you can figure out what we would have to do.

@Neil McRae could we tie-in match play with say a Zoom VC comp on single machines? With say 5 VC's over a couple of days? i.e. 5 machines comp like we usually do?

I guess folks could use mobiles or tablets for Zoom VC but I see an issue of battery drains and thus drop-outs, I think it would be better using a laptop but then this limits players that have laptops, so maybe phones that are connected into the mains so charging / not running from battery.
Or rather than one big VC maybe match play selects 4 players and those players do a 4 way VC with phones pointing at their machine when they are playing their ball so others can see playfield and score display.
A free Zoom account allows upto 40 min VC so 'should' be enough for a game.

@Neil McRae, @Mfresh, @johnwhitfield fancy a Zoom VC game tonight to see what its like and if its feasible? Dialed In at 8pm?
If so I can setup the Zoom VC and send invites.

I’m up for it if I can work out. Becca will be up for it as well

Could we make it slightly later though as there’s a clapping thing that goes on round here at 8 on the dot for a couple of mins.
