It is possible to get the system to mail you when there is a new post/reply in a particular forum, as well as a thread.
To do this in a thread, you just have to "subscribe" to it, and it'll mail you to tell you that it has a reply.
To do this in a forum, just enter for forum in question, and in the top right hand side it says "Watch Forum". Click on this and select the type of notification you would like.
