EM repair solder/soldering iron

Soldering irons get discussed quite regularly on the forum, so it is worth doing a search. You will also need a desoldering tool at some stage.

A number of us have bought "soldering iron stations". These are higher power, heat up faster, you can set the temperature to suit, there are interchangeable tips (fine ones very useful for some jobs). Something like this ...

Thank you for the advice, yeah the soldering station you linked is more what I was expecting to buy, think I’ll order that one now :D with the solder I was just worried about buying the wrong thing online, thanks again.

Thanks for getting back to me, I’ve never used a gas iron before, wasn’t sure if there were any advantages over the electric stations.
Just the convenience of cordless portability really for basic EM soldering jobs in and around the machine. If you intend removing the motor board and dissembling everything on the bench that's another matter. Ultimately its nice to own a portable and a solder station like the one in DRD posts above.

A good tip to heat up old solder (50+ years on EMs!) is to flow in a little bit of fresh.

There are also posts on here about USB rechargeable irons but I have no experience of those.

I hesitate to reply here since I could accurately be accused of not knowing what I'm talking about but....

I struggled with soldering until on some chap (who did know what he was talking about) came to help me.

He told me to change the solder I was using - "modern" solder has a higher melting point and is harder to use.

To be fair it was board work that was giving me the real grief. Maybe doesn't make much difference on EM contacts.

But, I bought a battered looking reel of "old" solder and yes - much easier to use.

That was years ago - still got that solder. I may have bought it from pinparts.co.uk but not sure TBH

I get my rosin core 60/40 from ebay and and I have been using a 25W Ersa soldering iron in the last 20 years without any issue.
