Easy fix for Diner?

Hi

A couple of issues have occurred with my Diner, hoping they are an easy fix!

1) The Clock jackpot wheel stays stuck on 8 million

2) The right ramp divertor (which is normally closed but opens for the cup shot) now stays open

Any advice much appreciated!

Cheers

Dan

Hi Dan,

1) the wheel can come loose - check the grub screw which holds it on.

2) does it close when the power is off ? If so then it is an electrical problem (transistor locked on) otherwise remove the balls from the game and lift the playfield up. Find the divertor coil and see if there is anything snagged to hold it open - then check that the plunger slides through the coil properly. Report back!

Hi

1)Regarding the grub screw, do I access it from the back by taking this cover off? View attachment 1188

I moved the wheel at the front a fraction, and when powered on it managed to move a small distance before giving up again.

2) The ramp divertor doesn't close when powered off, and when I looked at the coil I couldn't see anything snagged. The plunger doesn't seem to have much travel, and doesn't have much force when it snaps back, not sure if its meant to be like that? I've attached a couple of pics of the plunger and coil.

I have run the diagnostic test and it lists the following errors

Check Switch, Ramp Up/Down 10, Trough 2 balls 12, Right Ramp Exit 28, Lower Left Eject 50, Malfunction Can't Move Wheel

If I remember correctly then the grub screw is accessible from the front of the board and not the back as pictured in your photo. The ramp divertor coil looks fried and consequently holding the plunger in as seen in your photos. I suspect you certainly need a new coil with sleeve, possibly a new operating transistor too. In your photo you can see the plunger spring compressed, it shouldn't be... You could see if it will free up by giving the plunger a pull to try and get it out of the coil but I suspect the coil and sleeve may have melted around it hence holding it in position....

Hi

I've had a look at the wheel and I'm not 100% sure how to get to the grub screw from the front and am a bit wary of snapping anything off! I've attached a few pics of it from the front. The wheel moves freely by hand, but in-game it isn't able to move to the correct place and you can see it shaking very quickly as it tries to do so. The test reports that the wheel has malfunctioned as it cannot move.

Regarding the divertor coil, I was able to pull up the plunger but the divertor stays in the up position and does not move in-game. Could you advise where I can get a coil, sleeve and operating transistor (if its required), and if replacing this is fairly easy? My soldering is "OK" at best!

Any advice is much appreciated

Sounds like the grub screw is loose on the clock wheel.

When you pulled the plunger out did the diverter move? are you able to move the diverter using your hand?

Haven't found a safe way of getting to the grub screw, do you think I should just try pulling the wheel off carefully to get to it?

Regarding the divertor, yes it does move about 2/3 of the way when the plunger is pulled out/pushed in. And I'm able to move the divertor with my hand but after halfway it requires more effort as its not so loose.

A couple more issues surfaced tonight:(

The drop targets don't rise up at the start of the game, and secondly if you hit today's special, the game just hangs after the ball has dropped under the playfield and the game states "pinball missing".

I don't know Diner specifically but do the drop targets reset in solenoid test and when they're up and you tap them with your finger, do they register in switch test? If they don't reset in solenoid test then check that a wire hasn't fallen off the coil (or the diode). If they don't register in switch test then might be as simple as the switch/s need adjusting.

I'm guessing that todays special is a scoop under the pf, sounds like the switch in that scoop is registering the ball being there...again check it in switch test with your finger and also by dropping a ball in the scoop. Could just need adjusting or perhaps a dodgy switch.

The plunger coil is fried, probably the transistor too. That's blown a fuse , and taken out a group of solenoids. The whole wheel assembly can be unscrewed from the door, and removed giving easier access to the grub screw. Check that none of the transistor legs are broken, but suspect that you may need a new stepper motor.

Thank-you for all your advice guys, will take a look:)

Cheers
