Special When Lit will be hosting the third annual Festive Pinball Gathering on Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th December 2011. More information will be on this page nearer to the event.

Here is the more information bit:

Saturday 3rd December:

Open noon to 6pm. For the first time a Festive Classics will be held on Saturday in conjunction with/alongside the Special When Lit League. Both the Classics and League are open for everyone to play in.

For the Classics, 5 machines will be used with the top 3 qualifiers on each machine (plus the next best attempt – the 5 fourth places will be checked for percentage nearest the third place and the lowest will qualify) progressing to the knock-out stage. Trophies will be presented to the overall top 4 players.

For the League, 6 machines will be randomly selected out of those not being used for the Classics. The League will start at 2.30pm and will have breaks to allow players involved in the Classics to complete each knock-out stage.

Cost:

Classics – 50p per qualifying attempt per person; unlimited qualifying attempts allowed until 3pm. Any game in progress at 3pm will count on completion.

League – £5 per person, £3 for children under 16, free for children aged 10 and under.

For those who don’t feel competitive and would rather not participate in the League and/or the Classics then all remaining machines will be available to play. Normal Special When Lit entry fee applies: £5 per person, £3 for children under 16, free for children aged 10 and under.

Sunday 4th December:

Open 11am until 6pm. For those competing in the Festive Pinball Gathering Tournament, the competition starts noon. Please note that those competing will have priority on machines over anyone else attending during the competition. The competition is organised by Pinball News and a certain Martin Ayub. The tournament format will be qualifying games followed by knock-out rounds to determine the finalists. Trophies will be presented to the top 4 players, plus one for best female and one for best junior under 16 years old.

Cost:

£5 per person, £3 for children under 16, free for children aged 10 and under.

World Pinball Player Ranking (WPPR) points:

For the Special When Lit League, these will only apply to those who are not part of another local league (the national/regional organised UK Pinball League is separate and players in that league can attend and participate in any local league).

For the Festive Classics, normal side tournament (50%) WPPR points apply.

For the main Festive Pinball Gathering Tournament on Sunday, normal points apply. except for anyone wishing to attend both this event AND the Christmas Cracker event (in Leicester) the week after, where they will need to nominate in advance at which event they wish to acquire WPPR points. (restriction removed 14 Oct 11).

The venue address is: Special When Lit, Unit 6, Loyal Trade Business Park, Stephenson Road, Salisbury SP2 7NS.

Follow the signs for Churchfields Industrial Estate. The venue is in a little enclave away from the road immediately after Seamless Glass, which is found on the corner of Stephenson Road and Churchfield Road (Scats can be seen on the other corner).

A final line up of 16 machines will be announced nearer the time but will probably include the following:

Fire Mountain

Genesis

Pink Panther

Space Hawks

Spirit

Blackbelt

Bram Stoker's Dracula

Guns N' Roses

The Addams Family

No Fear

Star Trek: The Next Generation

Other useful information:

Parking is available outside the unit, visitors are asked to park sensibly to allow easy access for everyone. Once the compound is full, parking can be by the edge of the road on Stephenson Road (if you view the satellite photo on google maps you will see what I mean).

Lots and lots of accommodation available in and around Salisbury. www.laterooms.com list hotels from £40; B&B’s can be found using Google searching for B&B near SP2 7NS. There is a Premier Inn a couple of miles from the centre and just under 3 miles from the venue.

Shops are just over 5 min walk away. In fact most of the centre of Salisbury can be reached in 10 minutes or so on foot.

Transport wise, a good road network from almost any direction, Railway Station 5 mins away (Waterloo to Salisbury train takes 90 mins, Bristol to Salisbury at a tad over 90 mins). National express coaches arrival point 10 mins away.

Bournemouth and Southampton airports 40 mins away by car.

Pub wise Salisbury has one of the highest concentration of pubs per square mile in the country…

Any questions just ask :-D

Wow, that just seems like another week-end of pinball competition, whatever happened to the fun part?

Also, I see no reason why you would have to nominate whether you play in Salisbury or Leicester - sounds like you're trying to make people choose. At the end of the day, as I understand it, both competitions must be open to qualify for WPPR, so you can't prevent people from playing in both, nor should you want to.

sod the fun part
wink-1.png
as the song says 'it's a competitive world' and 'everything counts in large amounts'

Not at all. Martin informed me last year that this was the case should both events take place (as they were on the same day last year it didn't take effect and no announcement was made). Martin also verified my posting this year, prior to it being made public. I don't unilaterally decide anything when it comes to WPPR points, particularly if I want to host an event where they apply. However, I do admit that it's a pretty long spiel and that Martin could have missed that bit...!

Had an email from Martin to say that he has now recinded all restrictions for WPPR points. We are in the process of amending the website and I will now edit the original post removing the stipulation.

A quick note to say that the final machine line up looks like the following (subject to serviceability):

Modern:

Twilight Zone

Medieval Madness

Star Trek: The Next Generation (may be subbed for Bram Stoker's Dracula if problems persist).

Circus Voltaire

The Addams Family

Guns n' Roses

Fish Tales

Who? Dunnit

Golden Eye

No Fear

Classics:

Space Hawks

Fire Mountain

Pink Panther

Spirit

Genesis

Numbers wise we currently have 24 confirmed for Saturday and 27 confirmed for Sunday. Anyone else wishing to attend then please get in touch and we'll add you to the list...

Working that weekend - bugger woulda been good to play Spirit and Genesis(never played Genesis).Though just competitive pinball is not my preffered pin weekend.

May have to get a Spirit one day - tho another Sys 80 would have to go-prob HH like the game a lot but love Volcano and BH too much:)

Arrgh, it's not only competitive pinball, we do cater for non-competitive pinballing people but they have to accept that competition games will have priority. There is normally plenty of time during the day to play games - 6 hours on Sat and 7 hours on Sun. We are all there to have a bit of fun and socialise...
biggrin-1.png
sure, a few can take it a little too seriously sometimes at the top end of the competition ladder - that's human nature... :suspect:

After the first festive gathering one normally non-competitive player decided he'd play in the comps the next year (and did), not coz he felt left out (coz he could play non competition games on his own or with others) but rather he saw everyone enjoying themselves and felt he would too! We also have a chill out room away from the noise and an outdoors canopy covered smoking area with table and seating.

Perhaps it should have been called "Festive Pinhead Gathering (with competitions)" instead!

BYOB though!

Crikey time flies...

This weekend sees the Festive Pinball Gathering at Special When Lit. We will be open as follow:

Friday 6.30pm - 10pm

Saturday 12noon - 6pm (then on to Strada for a meal at 7.30pm).

Sunday 11am - 6pm

Website at http://www.specialwhenlit.co.uk/events.html

The reason for choosing Strada for the social meal is that they accept Tesco vouchers on food (so you only pay for the drink) and they also have 2 for 1 vouchers on-line (I plan to have plenty to hand) should people not have (or want to use) Tesco vouchers. Please let me know ASAP if you wish to join us for the Saturday evening meal.

Contrary to popular belief this event does cater for non-competitive pinballing people, however, you will have to accept that competition games will have priority during the weekend.

Finally this event is run on a not for profit basis, indeed last year it didn't even break even and yes, I was out of pocket. Should a profit be made, it will be put in to keeping Special When Lit open to the public.

ST:TNG is proving too stubborn in the fixing (and spares) department so it's being pulled
sad-1.png
and Bram Stoker's Dracula takes it's place in the final line up of games for the weekend.

While I remember special thanks to Greg, Neil, Mike and Ben for loan of their machines for the competition.

Special thanks also to Nick for his assistance with the website and to both him and Levi for help with prepping all the machines for the weekend.
