On Tuesday night I helped Dave Wilcox blitz a customers Star Wars machine. We cleaned, re-rubbered, LEDed, rebuilt flippers, replaced battery pack etc. This machine could do with a new DMD, it has a line out across the middle of the display and takes a long time to warm up. Even after warming up though when going into the user menu the display is barely readable and a real struggle to get through all the settings, even though in game and attract mode it is 90% working and very usable. Obviously it could do with replacing but can the " works fine ingame once warmed up but not in user menu " scenario be explained?

Cheers

A few possibilities - different data lines in use (ribbon cable/connector issue), ROM issue (any broken/dirty legs or bad chip holder), display pcb or display itself uses different areas to control text and graphics (text area being duff) again ROMs could be involved.

The Outcome......

Returned on Friday with screwdriver and chin in hand ( and sucking air with side action head movement )
Also, my spare DMD....
Re-seated ribbons, ic's removed and re-fitted. All loose earths tightened. No difference.
Installed my spare display and get in you beauty... gleaming like Rudolph's nose.

The display was the problem all along. It does make you think when it's okay in game, it should be okay in menu. But not always.
Thanks for the replies from Peter and Poi, always appreciated. And Dan.....

New display on order.
