So I am shopping/repairing a DE at the moment and this thing has some serious 60/120 humm.

Maplins spotty oinks are useless and I cant do with chasing single components or spending ages going through RS components.

Ebay and many sites sell repair kits for Bally etc but is there anyone who sells repair/cap kits for DE?

I may just shotgun the lot but primarily I need the caps for the big bulk capacitor On the +12, the supply has 18000uf and the -12 has a 1000uf cap.
I may increase the 18000uf to 22000uf and the 1000uf to 1200uf.

Sound board:

Replace the 470uf (C31 and C52) caps on the inputs of the regulators with 1000uf caps

I have also read that replacing the screws on the sound board with nylon or just fitting nylon washers reduces ground loop effects.

(Im still learning but hopefully this make sense)

Any thoughts?

Is this a DMD era DE ?

The 'hum' is really common with DE games, and after lots of reading up on it over the years ...nobody really seems to ever have found a conclusive fix for it :(

I notice it on my Tommy when its sat in attract mode. Also had it, to a more or lesser extent , on other DE titles.

Which DE is it? My Data East Time machine has a pretty serious hum at start up too - fortunately it decreases once it's warmed up, takes about 20 mins.

I'm looking for any advice anybody can give and reading your post I certainly intend to put nylon washers on sound board and, if it's the same design as yours, follow your advice for C31 and C52.

Also, I lost half the GI lighting for a while - just a poor connection - but while it was out the hum seemed better. Any ideas?

John
