Hiya all

Popped to see a poorly pin this evening, convinced the issue was PSU related, however now not so sure.

It's been in storage for over 10 years (thankfully with no batteries left on), and on power on, we have a smattering of sound card noises, loads of switch hit noises and then the CPU resets and starts again. Video attached.

I didn't get a good video, but the 5v led goes on, then the blank,no pia, the blank goes out and the board resets.

Psu voltages are 4.89v +12v and -14.8v.

Found some hacks that I've temporarily fixed by unsoldering and adding a new punch down connector.

PSU missing three screws so may not be earthing fully.

C8 on the PSU was very slightly domed.

R127 in the CPU looks toasted but test ok at 4.7k.

I've been reading pinwiki and realise I should have disconnected the switch and lamp matrix from the CPU and tried again.

So, planned next steps are to
  1. test with switch and lamp matrix
  2. Plan on ordering a NVRAM,
  3. New connection for CN8
  4. Investigate -12v what it's high.
Apart from this, does anyone have any ideas if I'm missing something?

Cheers
Ash

The issue doesn't seem too disimilar from my DE Robocop (although a much earlier DE pin)
It appeared as if sounds were looping and making odd random noises so I checked all the boards/voltages in the backbox but all it turned out to be was a loose connection on the hinge side of the coin door. The constant restarts were due to the shorting causing a slam tilt. Only realised when I knocked the lockdown bar and it triggered the madness then looked at everything in that end of the cabinet and voilà. Hope this helps.

Also my DE Star Wars was on v1.02 until a few days ago v1.07 is the most recent and sorted in mine now thanks to Paul.
1.02 doesn't even have the ball save activated.

Unplug as much as you can. Keep only the minimum to boot the CPU and see if that works. Then plug stuff in one by one (switching off each time) until it breaks again...

As @Fubar states. 4.89 is a bit low. Maybe as other boards kick in it brings this down under load and below minimum required to run cpu abd hence resets. The de mpu board should boot with just its one power cable connected. Disconnect power to all other boards.

Plus connectors on psu all need to be sound as do the fuse clips. Pull all the fuses on psu and make sure the clips still spring.

Returned tonight to do a few of the extra checks.

Fuse clips all good

Everything disconnected apart from the 5v to the bars and the mains to the PSU. Still resetting. See video.

Infact, more often than not when only the PSU was connected to transformer the rcd blew on power on. Unplug the PSU and no trip.

Next step for me to replace all the caps on the PSU, then it may be help required from those more skilled to look at the CPU board.

You probably don't need to replace all the caps; e.g. the 4 in a row rarely fail. And the issue may not be the caps, of course. But definitely change C2.
