From Facebook for those who are not already aware of this upcoming comp at PBR:

Basically this is a fun pinball comp with a slight twist, in that every player gets random powerup cards which can alter games - for example the ability to get an extra ball, change the game you will play completely, or even swap scores partway through the game! (Amongst many other things)

It is a lot of fun with plenty of randomness, social interaction and banter - highly recommended if you have never tried it before:

*****************

(From Neil):

Critical Hit Matchplay next Saturday the 9th of November- Pizza, Beer included if you register before 2nd November! Trophies, Cash and other prizes!

CHMP requires a different train of thought, no longer can player 4 think he has a walkoff, no longer can you tell your friends what games you don't want to play and no longer can you assume your goto game will be available!!! Can you bluff your opponents into playing their cards too early? Are you a hoarder and wait until the last few rounds to ensure you cross the line for the final?!
* Can you post a high score and get an additional card?
* Can you be third on The Uncanny X-Men and get an additional card?
* Can you roll any game and get an additional card?
* Can you get to any mini wizard mode and get an additional card?

This is pinball, This is Critical Hit, This is Critical Hit Matchplay!
Saturday 9th November 2024 at the World Famous Pinball Republic.

This tournament will also be a Stern Army Launch tournament with The Uncanny X-Men LE with prizes etc from Stern!

Now 34 people already registered (38 if the rest of the Vinces come) - should be a big one and a really fun day! (Hopefully several more that haven't clicked the register button yet!)

DOMINO is very generously sponsoring Pizza and Beer if you register before Nov 2nd! So if sitting on the fence get signed up :)

Gutted I can’t make it, sounds like a great format that I’ve not played in before. Have fun everyone.

47 people officially signed up with a couple more potentially waiting in the wings, great turnout so far.

Still time to join in, as already mentioned this one is more fun focused with the cards and randomness, so might be a good one for newer players to try out/enjoy. (If any queries, please feel free to shoot me a message)

... and for those on the Post DPO comedown, what better way to beat the blues than another pinball event? 😄

Thanks to Neil and all the PBR crew for all the setup/hard work/effort behind the scenes for another great day. Very much appreciated.

I won't do a full tournament report but it was a fun day with the cards element adding a lot more banter and interaction to proceedings. Despite the massive additional chaos Neil managed it very well I thought.

I'll share what I remember of the playoffs for those not present:

Ben Pike, back on great form after a a bit of a dip had a tie breaker with Ed Rojas (not sure which game) which he won to take him through to the last 8. The playoffs, similar to PBR league finals was a 5-8th match, with top 2 continuing on to contest the 3-6 match, with the top 2 joining the top 2 qualifiers (Matt and myself) who had a direct path to the final.

The first playoff match was on James Bond 007 - (Ben Pike, Pete Bennett, Keith Burden and Andy Brock). Ben Pike put up a nice score of 150M+, with a great third ball - with Keith Burden on close to 100M, Pete Bennett was struggling on 4M after 2 and needed some inspiration. With one last roll of the dice he decided to play his "Whisper" card with the aim of summoning me to help him with strategy on this key final ball. I was more than happy to help - but the plan was quickly scuppered as Keith cast "Shatter" to counter the spell and Pete was left to fend for himself. Both he and Brock could not overtake and Ben Pike and Keith moved on.

The Semi final was on Metallica - with the Excellent Ozkar Olave and the in form @cyberkryten, fresh from his DPO team tournament triumph joining Ben and Keith. Scores of 21M and 15M were enough to take Martyn and Ben through.

The final was on Iron Maiden. Martyn took the early advantage with 60M on ball 1, starting Trooper MB. Maiden hasn't always been my best Stern, but yesterday it went well and I scored 180M on ball 1 with a couple of trooper super jackpots. I was feeling very confident after that start, but then Matt put up 120M of his own on his ball 1... On ball 2 I ended at 230M, then played the add tilt warnings card (Trollololo) on Matt to put him on double danger he countered with a shatter, and I re-countered the spell so it went through. Then he "possessed object" on me and the card was "darkness" meaning the blanket went up to cover the scores to add another wrinkle to the game!

In the end I finished on 320M, Matt 200M, with Martyn 3rd and @Ben-P fourth.

Shout outs for Ozkar Olave - brilliant stuff from the UK Open junior champ to qualify in 3rd and finish 6th overall! As a note, Sergio needs a new nickname as he is clearly no longer the "best Spanish player in the UK" with the emergence of Ozkar! Although Sergio must be congratulated on his launch party win in a very successful day for the Olave family (great performance from Eneko too in joint 20th).

Also very well done to Diane who very nearly qualified for the playoffs and played outstandingly all day - winning the Ladies' trophy. The much maligned Tony Greenwood also took 19th - another decent result for this gent whose chances were scoffed at by many (not by me!) prior to the tournament.

A very good day all in all, my family enjoyed the cards element for sure and we'd definitely play again next year if it is run again.

ALL - do share your best stories below about how the cards were used to either help you or screw you over - there were a few belters! :)

Paging @robotgreg who seemed to have a new tale of being destroyed by the cards every time I bumped into him!
yeah I think there were a lot of " F*** Greg" cards being played :).

It was a really fun day for sure. I do feel bad about my last game, Dan Pike used his last card to award and extra ball to another member of our group, me, on Jaws. I hadn't had a good day with only a few wins so I was glad of the chance to save my dignity and added around 150m to my crap 60m during regulation play, winning the game & effectively ending Graham and Tucks chances of qualifying 🫣

which helpfully nudged me back into a playoff spot!! ;)

Most entertaining card play that I saw was Lan (Yuen's wife) played a card to swap Matt Vince out of her group, obviously with a very good chance of him being replaced with a less challenging player. As the replacement player was chosen randomly, her face was a picture as it turned out Matt's replacement was Yuen himself. Talk about jumping out of the frying pan and into the fire!
