Anyone else think they may have trouble going to any of the USA events following the announcement from Mr Tango that you're going to have to disclose all your social media posts for the last five years? 🤫

So far I know of no one who had an issue getting in (I don’t know anybody in Somalia etc…)

Quite fancied going to something next year.
I'm buggered

Good thing I am not using social media. Can’t see how they want to enforce this.

ESTA applications I've completed for myself and numerous family members, have had an optional field to add your Social media links for years, presumably that field just becomes mandatory 🤷‍♂️

You’re on here!
Wouldn’t call this social media, that is FB, IG, X, etc. But let’s assume I fill my ESTA tomorrow how are they going to link that to my account here if I don’t tell them?

There was a story years ago where a couple of young numpties, lets call them, posted on twitter that they were going to blow up in New York or LA wherever they were going in the states, they apparently got turned away at the border so they have been tracking things on social media for years.

I'm just hoping Mr N Garage wades in and defends British people's right to free speech...................................

Oh, is that only when it suits?
(I know, I know, this ain't a political forum etc)

Not sure about these things. Yes, it is twenty years back but they weren't able to id someone only learning to cruise and not starting/landing a plane... Only believe such stories if they happen to me or someone I know really well.

Was this story - https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-16810312

I remembered the exact details incorrectly but it was 13 years ago, dont believe they havent already been monitoring stuff like social media for years.

More interestingly it seems UK is doing this as well if you read the last bit of the article. Would be interesting to know how they link social media accounts to persons.

Some people actually use their real names on social media, I remember facebook a while ago started disabling peoples account if they had fake names on there.

Background checks have always existed by default (as the department of homeland security feels necessary, including checking your online presence)

What you are referring to is 2016 legislation introduced by Obama

June 2025 legislation expanded it to include student and exchange VISAs

December 2025 proposes introducing it also for tourists. This is not in place, it will be later half of 2026 if approved at the earliest.

Can't recall ever posting anything in my lifetime that would get me excluded from the USA if this did go ahead

The younger generations seem to have no problem using their full names and posting loads of images of themselves, they even have 'shadow profiles' for people not on the platforms. For the majority it would be fairly trivial to link the two.
I imagine this goes a bit beyond sweeping social media for terms like "destroy America" or "blow up the airport" and more looking for posts criticising/ridiculing government action, and even if it doesn't will people wanting to travel there self censor anyway?

There is a massive scandal going down in Minnesota right now. This is arguably a major part of why these measures have been taken.

In years gone by the UK might have been immune from measures targeting countries like Somalia. But the UK of today, is not the UK of the 1990s.

Whether you love or loathe him, the Pres can be right. He called Sweden years and years before anyone else mentioned it.

2017 .........

Today .........
