Normally UK government schemes are a gimmick/ waste of time/ seem to be of no relevance to me.
Just booked same day direct return train fares on the GNER at £20 per return from Retford in the Midlands to Newcastle. Northbound journeys like this are rarely discounted so we invariably drive.
It is called the Great British Rail Sale and might be worth a look.
There are some outrageous bargains on there, especially given petrol costs right now.
