Cabinet wood question

I'll hopefully be starting on the strip down of my cabinet shortly and one of the tasks that I need to do is to reinstate the back end of the cab.

Dan had previously replaced the back (which I think had gone rotten) with a sheet of MDF but i'm a bit obsessive over these sorts of details so I want to get it as close to the original spec as possible. As part of the work i'm also reinstating the original rotolock and fitting a new cord cup.

So - the question is - what sort of wood do I need?

I think it's 3/4" ply that's required, which by todays metric measurements would be 18mm.

B&Q sell 18mm WBP exterior ply. Would something like that be suitable?

Thanks in advance for the help. Looking forward to also patching up the nasty shark bite in the corner of the cab.

anyone else with an avatar featuring a smiling dog with eyewear and neckwear, please post here immediately

Damn it Dan, i'm so disappointed that you didn't change your avatar JUST to satisfy the three in a row criteria.......

:-(

Edit: Although to be fair.... Mmmmm, booobs!!!

Although it's not total chuff you can get better ply than that at B&Q. But I doubt they were using top shelf Canadian Maple back in Chicago when they were banging these things out in the factory.

Surely there's be a good wood merchant near you? Get them to cut it for you.

I may well end up doing that - i'm not particularly keen on B&Q because like so many stores now they charge over the odds for the 'convenience' of being able to just go and grab what you want.

I'm pretty sure I can get what I need from a local company named Howdens so i'll give them a try.

For sheet stuff B&Q isn't too bad actually considering you can just rock up 7am to 9pm, pull it off the shelf and have 3 or 4 cuts for free (mostly so it fits in the car!). Their plasterboard and carc is about as cheap as it gets as they just sell so much of it, even to trade.

Swings and roundabouts. Always nice to use a decent timber yard. They know their stuff and generally stock quality wood, but you might pay extra when it's not needed.

If I were buying loads of the stuff i'd be more worried - but I only need a small piece for the back of the cab.

I'm off work tomorrow so I might go and take a look at what they've got.

You need to find out your local wood yard, they will be able to sort you out with what you need no problem.
