Buying replacement glass

Been on the phone to my local glaziers about getting a new play field glass. They've offered me a piece of toughened Opti White glass. Anyone had experience of this glass? Worth it?

Also, they've said they can only do 4mm or 6mm. As 3/16" is approx 4.75mm I'm wondering if the 6mm will still fit?

Prices don't seem too bad - £42.80 for the 4mm, or £55.60 for the 6mm (both ex VAT).

I've also asked them about edge finishing options. Waiting to hear back on that.

5mm glass (which is the closest to 3/16) is available but not carried as a stock item, so most companies don't want to order as a special. Persevere - it is available. Last piece of standard, 5mm, toughened glass I got was £26 inc vat so you may want to shop around. You need to ask for polished edges and make sure the kite mark is in a corner as close to the edge as possible.

Where abouts in the UK are you Rob. There is a place near me (Wigan) that does 5mm toughened for just over £30 iirc

I'm in Sevenoaks, Kent.

Is your supplier quoting that price for Opti White glass? I'm specifically
Interested in this because of clarity. If so I'd like to know what his shipping cost would be? Never had a piece of glass shipped - can imagine its not cheap?

No I doubt shipping would be cheap. Much better off finding somewhere reasonably local that you can collect from personally.

Also no idea if its 'opti white', but I doubt it. To be honest I just asked for 5mm toughened and that's what I got. It has smooth edges, but no kite marks.
Most glass has a slight green tint when viewed under bright light at an angle, so I guess 'opti white' is less green or something?

Opti White is much clearer glass that doesn't have that green tinge because if low iron content. This also gives it "very high light transmission" according to their blurb, which should look great on a pin. I hope.

I'm hoping this will be a good addition to my Taxi...

Also found that Pilkington do Optiwhite in thicknesses from 2mm to 19mm, which is not what the glazier told me earlier (they said it only comes in 4mm or 6mm!), so I'm going to find a new company that can supply a 5mm sheet.
