BSD GI issue

Hello chaps, whilst playing BSD last night, the lower GI went out. Also a line of bulbs in the backbox.

- turned off and off again. GI worked.
- ten minutes later it went off.
- then intermittent.
- manual says J121 and J120 connectors
- reseat these connectors and all works.
- turn on machine this morning and the problem is back
- repeat reseating of connectors but no joy this time.
- GI is now off all the time and not intermittent.

Any pointers for me ?

Try and Re flow solder on the header pins. Sounds like an intermittent fault due to cold solder.

Also check fuses. If it's blown you could have a short somewhere

- I have identified F108 as the fuse that protects the lower GI and it is fine.
- I've noticed that LED 3 is on - manual says it is normally off. Maybe that has something to do with it.
- the connectors are fine - no burning.
- I'll get the board out and check the pins and solder.

Holy **** - I'm getting close. I looked at the GI schematic (which means virtually nothing to me) and noticed that J113 and J115 were labelled there.
I've given J115 a tweak and it works/not works dependent on how it is seated.

If it's coming on when you tweak the connector. It'll likely be cold solder joints

Thanks - can I cure it by just gently heating the joints with the iron or do I need to add solder ?

If it was me I'd re punch the IDC connector before pulling the board out. Isn't that header the one with the spare header in parallel to to it?

Replace the header AND connector. I used to fanny around re-flowing and cleaning the pins but it's not worth it. They were a sh!t design when new. They are now a **** design and 25 years old. Replace with trifurcon pins and forget about it forever.
