I havent managed to look yet for the knock mech but will hopefully get a look tonight.

Hi @BigIan thank you for your sensible contribution to this thread. Below is a snap I've borrowed from PeteB's machine. The plumb bob rod is circular with no thread and the plumb bob is then secured with the thumb screw shown. Maybe it fell off but no signs in the bottom which I've cleared out now.
