Do people have recommendations for the best wood filler please ?

I have tried the ready mixed, the powder, the 2 part ones with hardener..... and never found one that I really like as they all seem to "dish" so you end up filling/ smoothing the paste. Then repeating the process at least once again.

Thanks

Depending on what you want to use it for, P38 may or may not be suitable, whether or not you would be painting over, etc.

But, and I'm not criticising or suggesting you are doing it wrong, but most 2part fillers are a bit fussy when it comes to application.

Google "p38 filler shrinkage" and read through the AI tips/issues, etc to see what I mean.

Done right, I rarely find any shrinkage, but it does happen from time to time.

I think most fillers can shrink to an extent, even professional car body repairers can have have problems with p38, you could try and fill so it's slightly proud of the surface.

it's also usually softer than the surrounding area so when sanding flat it's easy to sand the filler down too far when using a block.

For larger areas I have taken to filling with fibreglass resin and letting gravity level it out, so it's a mill or two below the surface then skimming with p38, but often still need a 2nd application to make it seamless.

A sacrificial guide coat can really help identifying low spots too
