Playing in the back of a strange science and noticed its missing its 40w bulb.
Can anyone shed some light please?

I have read up and found this:

Scroll down to section 1f. Can you really use a Fluorescent bulb here? Doesnt make sense as they should fash very fast during game play.
TNT amusements say no??

2:50 into spiel.

Thanks

Yep as already has been said you can't use a fluro bulb in there because it does switch on and off. I have an LED bulb in my Escape from the Lost World, and it works better as the standard 40w bulb in the Strange Science is a little dim

What wattage did you go for? As they don't generate much heat you could get a higher (equivalent) wattage if a standard 40W seemed a bit dim.

Had a trawl through t'net and found that the wattage didn't necessarily tie up with the brightness on led lights.
Some 5W domed leds were the same as a 30W and other 5W the same as a 40w incandescent bulb.

I found a bulb with surface mounted led's under a cap thats 600+ lumens at 7W. About 50w from a standard Incandescent bulb. The standard in this machine was a 40W (380+ LM), I'm hoping that will be just about enough to brighten it up without causing too much of a localised bright area over the top of the bulb.

I have seen some of the dim lit bulbs on the machines over here and have to wonder if they popped a 240V in instead of a 110V?
On the US youtube vids the 40W seems to light up the back fairly well. Although I do agree it could do with a touch more.

Similar to this one...

Ooh! Now they're interesting! And for your application as most of the LEDs are mounted on the side hopefully it won't create a shocking bright spot in the centre of the translite. You can polish the metal ground plane sheet with Autosol - that should help bounce the light around and keep it diffused.

You think like I do

That is similar to what I have, but mine is smaller, so probably a lower wattage, it is however brighter than the incandescent 40w

Would you not be better with a standard strip light, like on Stern machines ?
My experience with backbox lightning is LED looks poo. The older style looks far better.

Daz missed post number 1

Aside from the ingame effects, if I remember right, when it is in attract mode, there is a time where the neon tube comes on and the game makes a loud arcing noise and the backglass flashes at a very high rate. I bet that would kill a fluro in what 10 seconds?

Switching fluoros on and off rapidly really kills their life expectancy. You'd probably get through a lot of starters before the actual tube goes. But the main disadvantage is warm up time. Fluoros are very energy efficient compared to incandescent but their main drawback is they usually take a while to switch on. Think how long you stand there in the dark in the garage waiting for the effing strip light to blink a few times before they finally stay on!

The corn bulb arrived today so I popped it in and gave it a whirl.
Not too bad for a couple of quid from china

That looks fantastic! Good colour and even spread. Is it really flashing on and off that fast? Any chance of seeing the action on the inside of the backbox?

It looks great! Really nice effect, because an incandescent would never switch that fast but LEDs are near instantaneous on-off. So, I think in this case an LED is a good improvement. They're not always right, but I think this one is! :) HAPPY DAYS

Been having a play today and have noticed a small issue.

The led bulb doesn't fully turn off. I think this could be a result of something done on purpose to prolong the incandescent bulb life.
I have searched the net and found others having the same results. None the less it does not effect the flashing feature etc.
