ATX Power Supply

Hi all, quick question that I'm sure someone familiar with computers will know straight away.....

I've a coin operated machine (a roulette machine) where the PC has failed to boot. Apparently it all worked fine until earlier this week!

I'm thinking the power supply might be the issue, but I'm not sure..... so my question is, are all ATX power supplies the same? If I bought an ATX power supply online, will it fit or is there anything particular I need to look out for?

I think the ATX part means it is a standard unit and should have all the same connectors. I believe the only difference is the wattage. More oomph required for mor demanding systems.
 
Thanks Andrew, that is what I was hoping - I'll have a proper look tomorrow, and if I need one, it looks like ATX power supplies are fairly cheap anyway - around £13 on eBay post free by the looks of it! If only more replacement parts were so cheap and accessable :)
 
only thing to watch out for is if you need minus 5v,as a lot of the newer ones don't cater for that voltage
 
and some have 24 pin ATX connectors, others have 20 pin - the first 20 pins are the same, some need the extra pins... I suspect you need just the 20 :)
 
If the PC is not coming on at all ie dead it's worth checking the bios battery on the motherboard I have had experience with PC based coin op in the past

If you look online. There is a pin you can short to ground and get the supply to turn on. Then you xan test the power supply away from the machine.

Also you will need to use that method if the bios battery has expired
 
Hi Guys, many thanks for all the tips! Sorry for not replying sooner, got the parents over for the weekend so the house is a bit mad!

Morning all............ I might have made some progress........ after giving all the connectors a wiggle to check they're tight, I switched on again and got the following messages - see attached pic. It looks like I need to connect a keyboard to progress any further, and sadly although I thought I had one I cant find it, so I'll have to try and buy one or borrow one somewhere.

So, do the attached messages suggest a particular problem? Could it be a flat battery causing it not to start? Any idea if there is anything to be cautious of while changing the batter (losing settings like on a pinball). I think it is a CR0232 or something like that. I think I might have some of them somewhere!

Once you get that keyboard sorted, go into the settings and disable the halt on error thing.

Always loved that press f1 on keyboard error, especially when your running a "headless" server..
 
Likely the battery has failed and lost the boot settings you will need to replace it and go into power settings and enable boot on power up so it auto boots when power is applied
 
Thanks all, I've ordered a PS2 keyboard so I can get past the error screen and will see what happens. I've also ordered some CR2032 batteries so I can change them in case they have failed.

Thanks for all the help so far, I'll let you know how I get on when the keyboard arrives :)
