Addams Family Test Errors (Help!!)

Hello all.

I've recently bought my first pin and it's a TAF, which I'm delighted about having been an original player back when it in our pubs.

It was playing okay (albeit blowing the occasional F112 fuse) but is now throwing up this, and a couple of opto errors.

I have a multimeter but little to no experience of what to do with it.

Is there a kind soul who's able to offer any information and/or advice on what's wrong here please?

I'm also wondering if there's any experienced engineers who are prepared to come to have a look if I can't fix it myself. I'm in Cardiff, South Wales.

Quite a few of us down your neck of the woods.. :)

Go into switch edge test. There you see the row shorted on the screen. With the game running, gently remove the row and col connectors off the CPU board and see if the problem clears up. If not, problems in the CPU board (possibly u19). If so, problem is in the wiring. That gives you a good pointer as to where to start looking

Is there any corrosion on the CPU board at all from battery leakage? Maybe post a pic?

Great response and a good starting point for me.

So the entire row 5 error disappeared from the grid when I disconnected J208 from the CPU board and reappeared when I plugged it back in.

I'm not sure if this is a good thing since I now need guidance on how to check what wiring.

I can confirm that all components in Row 5 don't work, but that won't be news to anyone else. Everything else seems functional, including all solenoids.

That shows the issue is on the board, one of the ICs for the switch matrix might have blown ( 74LS240 if I remember , readily available). Hopefully they're socketted to make this easier.
If the IC is the issue, it could have blown because of a short somewhere on the playfield, or could be damage to the board from battery damage.

Can you share a pic of the mpu?

Okay, I'm a bit confused here.

Unplugging the socket from the CPU board cleared up the problem.

Doesn't this confirm the issue is somewhere in the cabling under the playfield?

Sorry I misread it as if it was the opposite. You're right!

Check the switches in the affected row for shorts. There's a clever way to work out where the issue could be but I don't remember, someone else will 😄

Given that you have both a switch row short and an intermittently blowing solenoid fuse, my first suspicion, would be checking for any switches touching a solenoid under the playfield.

They could of course be entirely unrelated

Had someone over who tested the opto board.
It was only partially working.

Fingers crossed this was the problem.

Replacement board should arrive today.

Or sold to somebody that can use it and would fix it. Do let me know if you want to sell me the non working board.
