As I’m in the middle of trying to move house and my games are going into storage very soon I shouldn’t really have started this but as usual I can’t help taking any new game to bits within a few days of owning it :D

The starting point is the Tron I picked up from @chris b a few weeks ago. It had come straight from an op so was dirty and had the odd small issue but looked a good candidate for a clean up.

I’ve already made a fair bit of progress but before looking at that the plan is to do the following:
  • Strip the top of the playfield and clean everything plus fix any issues
  • Remove all mechs from the bottom of the playfield, clean and rebuild
  • Clean all inserts and replace lamps
  • Mod the crap out of it :)
In terms of mods and replacement parts I've ordered quite a bit for this:
  • Brand new ramps (the old ones would have been ok but were damaged at the entrances) with ramp protectors
  • Eli/Pinbits Ramp Light kit
  • Tron Arcade cab v3.1
  • Iluminated Light Cycles
  • Mirror Blades
  • Chrome bumper caps
  • Coloured sling plastic protectors
  • Recogniser bank decal
  • Transparent Titan Silicone ring kit
  • All the usual odds and sods needed to shop a game
First job was to strip the topside of the playfield and see what we're dealing with

It's an affliction!

Tron is a modder's paradise, and actually looks much better for it vs. some of the B/W overly modded games (e.g. TZ).

You've spent a fair few quid there already, offsetting the bargain machine price a little, so don't forget to crown it off with a DIY 50p red/orange LED in the recogniser - looks ace! Either to the GI or the insert (GI for me).

This is also a good LED OCD game. Horrid without.

Got an LCD Colour DMD in mine, which is fine, but it's the only single game where i'd consider the LED version, just because of the colour intensity fitting the Tron theme well.

I'll have a look at this

For now I'm going with incandescent lamps for the controlled lights and a mixture of LED and incandescent in the GI. I don't want the game to be too bright so that it makes the ramp light kit pop more...that's the theory anyway. It'll also save me some cash for now as like you say, the mods are bloody expensive  If it looks sh*t then I'll LED it later and stick an OCD board in.

This is one mod that I'm not sure is worth it on Tron :hmm: From the vids I've seen it's one of the weaker ColourDMD games just because there's not a huge amount of cool animations and the digitised vid clips never look that good. I decided there were better things to spend the money on for now but I'd be interested to get your view on whether it was a worthy upgrade?

Top side mostly stripped. As you can the game is a bit grubby but nothing too bad. Next up is taking all the mechs off the bottom. While doing that I started cleaning and tumbling the top side parts.

Here’s a few more pics of the topside before any cleaning:

Everything is off the bottom of the playfield and been given a good clean. Wiring harness was cleaned with baby wipes and all the inserts done using cotton buds and glass cleaner.

I’ve replaced all insert lamps with new but still need to swap out a couple of switches and one of the flipper coils which had got a bit toasty at some point in its life and the sleeve was welded in. This is the same flipper that was sticking when I got the game so hopefully that cures it.

Topside of the playfield has also been cleaned, polished and waxed and has come up really nicely! I used to use a 3 step process of foam cleaner followed by novus 2 and then gerlitz wax but since chatting to chris b and seeing the results he was getting I’ve swapped to his process of foam cleaner, t-cut, resin polish and then finished off with gerlitz wax. It’s worked a treat on this Tron!

Crazy how bare ass the underside of the playfields are on those era sterns. Looking good though mate.

A lot simpler to work on than 90's B/W stuff and especially Sys11

Lots of progress recently! Everything is back on the underside of the playfield:

One of the first mods I fitted were the target splints that keep the switch stacks straight. Definitely needed on Tron as the U target on mine was bent to the right and blocked the Quorra shot:

Most stuff is also back on the top side as well and I’ve fitted the coloured plastic protectors:

I’m still waiting on a couple of the major mods to arrive from the States but the new ramps are here so next big job is to fit the ramp light kit and install them into the game. Here’s a pic from a power on test so I could check lights, switches etc:

It's cleaning up a treat.
Looks like you will have a peachy game on your hands after all the hard work.

I put the hammer down on this during the week as my house move looms ever closer and the games need to go into storage. Whilst that means I haven’t made many updates to this log I did manage to get it finished and it’s come up a treat! The only things left to do are buy the Flynn’s Arcade sign when they become available in the next few weeks and get an external sub once I’m in my new place. Here’s a few pics in the daylight:

It plays bloody fast!!!!!

Looks a little different to when you started. :D
Top job buddy looks stunning. Fast is good, especially on Tron.

Chris
How many hours do you think it took you to shop this game?
And how difficult is it to shop a game?
My Excalibur is absolutely filthy and I would love to shop it myself but I am scared that the game would never work again!
Is there a special order in which to shop?
Upside and then downside?
Plenty of photos throughout I take it.
Is there a shopping tool.kit? Like the essential tools to do a decent job?
Thanks
Dom
