This cap is fubar right ?

If youre going to take that off be very very very careful about pulling out the through pins......(I have made a balls of a few i'll admit)
I've heard, but never tried cutting and unrolling the cap then desoldering works well.

Just use a de-soldering gun on it, piece of ****.

100% yes, that has failed. It has vented from the top. Looks like a classic 'capacitor plague' era failure, but it's just coincidence because Data East pinballs are too old to be caught in that nightmare

Also you need to treat surrounding electronics with something to neutralise the acid, just as if you had found exploded batteries. I can see electrolyte on the nearby transistors and ROM chip.

Acid corrosion may take time to cause proper damage, but don't waste any time hesitating here...

Thanks Paul

Can anyone recommend a desoldering gun/station. I've always coped with a solder sucker but been thinking of getting one for a while, makes sense now.

I don't do huge amounts of board work so something that does the job without breaking the bank.

I bought this:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B011873JQU/ref=pe_3187911_189395841_TE_3p_dp_1
and it is absolutely the dog's ******** - desolder anything in seconds.

BUT: if you buy one - and this goes for any brand probably - it is vital that you clean out the desoldering gun that heats the solder and then sucks it into a storage area very regularly. You get a couple of pipecleaner like tools to do this, but the instructions don't really make clear that you need to clean every few minutes, and at the end of each desoldering session. If you don't then the solder will solidify, oxidize and expand in the nozzle and it will be impossible to remove and you'll have to buy a new gun. I learned this from experience

I have the Duratool ZD985 which is the big brother of the one above... Excellent piece of kit...

Honestly, if you're not planning to do a lot more soldering/desoldering in the future, then the solder sucker is more than adequate. I would suggest using a sucker alongside copper braid for clean up of pads/vias while using the sucker for bulk removal of solder..

True. Always served me ok in the past. Reality is it's just for the occasional repair on my collection. I don't have many fixer uppers coming through these days so an expensive piece of kit would be gathering dust for months on end.

Ive been in Maplin recently, there was 60% off all soldering / desoldering gear, i needed another soldering iron, but they didn't have the exact model i wanted, so I bought a metal detector and a drone, but that is besides the point, they are having closing down sales, everything is at least 50% off.

I had it in my head that the components and specialist gear would be the last stuff they would want to liquidate. Cheers for the tip.

I'm wary of buying anything other than very simple/basic stuff from Maplins given their situation. The warranty will likely be an issue and reportedly they can't even refund stuff that doesn't work out the box.

Oh bloody hell that's a good point. I need to stock up on soldering iron tips for the one I already had....

Popped into a local Maplin yesterday and they had several prominent printed-from-a-computer signs stating that due to the circumstances everything was "sold as seen".

Not sure the legality of that, or whether it's nationwide, but good luck taking a company in administration to court.

good point, never occured to me about the warranty, most stuff always lasts 12 months anyway, the sale is 60-70% off now, and some stuff that has been job lotted together is even cheaper than that.

Anyone tried one of these half way house combo of soldering iron and suction tool - cheap as chips - may be ok for small jobs I guess ???

whoever buys it, do a follow up and tell everyone how long it lasted and what problems it had on the way to its demise
twice during temporary moments of insatity, i compulsively bought cheap china soldering irons which I didn't even need,
just as well really as both burned out the first day i used them

I thought Duratool were ok from what I have read on here ?

I have one the same or similar, TBH it's crap, always too hot, great for removing solder pads from boards, I no longer use mine and bought a desolder station with built in vacuum pump.

If you want the one I have PM your address and I'll send it to you, I don't want anything for it.

Chris.

If you haven't already got one @newdos that money is better put towards the SS-02 Japan manual one.

The recommended Duratool is the pump one, CPC usually have them on offer for £60 delivered (not at the moment though!)
