Alright fruitcakes

So I scored a TAF from @chris b last month which arrived on a Wednesday.
The situation was, it booted although had horrendous acid damage and had no DMD. Oh and it was recovered from the titanic back in 19 canteen.

So prior to Martin collecting, Chris kindly dropped the cpu round to @myPinballs for emergency heart surgery. Jim cleaned up the acid damage, installed NV RAM and latest Gold Roms.

So the machine arrived shortly followed by the freshly repaired CPU.

First thing I did was give the cab a clean with spray cleaner. After the brown mess dropped off, it was very clean, straight and pretty good nick. Certainly didn’t match in the inside. No need for a redecal........ yet.

I then removed the dmd and tried it in WH20. No dice. So I was fairly happy the dmd was dead and it wasn’t the driver board. So I dug out an old dmd which i bought for £20 a while back with a known vertical line out and tried it in the TAF.
Before turning on I removed all the fuses and checked continuity and the that they were the correct value. 5 of them were incorrect, some of them wildly out of whack. So they were replaced and the big switch on commenced
It burst in to life with only a couple of opto faults.

So I began the tear down. It is the most corroded game I’ve ever had and it’s gonna take some serious cleaning. But it’s a slow time project. I have a tumbler arranged just need to get it to mine. A shed load of parts on order.
Still after the following parts if anyone can help

Translite
Plastics (any as mine are yellowed)
Insert decals
Flipper button cabinet wear protectors
Anything elseyou think will assist

So until next time here are some pics of the tear down

Wow, that is the grottiest TAF I've ever seen! Any idea of the history behind the machine that lead to it being in that condition? Must have been well-played hence the ingrained dirt, but possibly then stored somewhere cold and dank for a long time... good luck with the resto!

That's dirty.
I will have a dig around, pretty sure I have sling shot plastics and maybe others. I have a decal set somewhere as well.
Will let you know what I come up with.
D.

I wish my wife was this dirty... as the saying goes ;)

Yeah but I reckon it’ll come up ok in the end. I’m up for the challenge.

Daz you’re a legend

Thanks all

Looks like a great candidate for the Evaporust bath approach.

@Spandangler I wouldn't bother trying to clean up the nylon nuts, cross head bolts, machine screws or cross head screws with a tumbler judging by the condition of them. Bin the lot and get some new. I can help with most things you'd need. The t posts are the only ones that usually polish up ok in a tumbler so keep those.

It may cost alittle initially but the end result will be much better and also you not be picking bits of corn cob media out of screw heads for the next 5 years!

Yes mate was going to order new. It’s just a pita trying to figure out all the different sizes!! I always order the wrong ones

Hey dudes

Been chipping away slowly. Only really getting about an hour a night at the moment unfortunately.

Almost there. Just pops and underside to do. All major mechs have been removed.

Once I assessed it, I decided to go the new playfield route (well restored original) So it’s on order from Chris Platt.

Taking a load of parts to my mates dad with a tumbler tomorrow.
Got a few litres of rust remover to bath the bigger parts in

Got to soak all the plastics in miracle cleaner then rinse

New ramp from @RobZombie kindly posted to @replicas for new flaps.

New DMD incoming from @windoesnot.

A shed load of new parts from Andy and Phil incoming

I’ll post a break down of costs at the end but I expect to come in under £4K once I sell some stuff to offset it. (Old playfields etc..)

A labour of love for sure.

The case continues

Here’s some of the tear down pics

That’s some dedication. I’m still
Undergoing refurb procrastination.

Hope it comes up shiny for you.

I can do most things as you know mate but **** me I take my hat of to you as I couldn’t do that without forgetting where things go. Will be nice when done as your others are

Thanks man.

Going through a motivational lull at the moment. I go into the garage. Stare at it for 20 mins then walk out again!!

Been busy with the wire brush drill attachment and evaporust bath.

Also received these wear protectors from Pinball Rescue in Oz. Great service and communication. And they’re saved me a redecal as the cab is nice apart from this

Also legendary to deal with. Thanks mate.

Daz is doing my ramp flaps, another mate doing my tumbling.

@chris b has a packaged me up a load of useful bits and save me wedge of cash. I hadn’t even thought about the cab speaker but Chris noticed it was hosed so sent me a new one.

What a great community we have here. Top blokes.

Next job is to spruce up the coin door.

I’m going to fill the holes with JB WELD and then rub down and paint with Hammerite hammer d effect paint and hopefully it’ll look good and save me buying a new door.

Just waiting on the playfield now to really crack on. Although I wouldn’t complain if that didn’t arrive until after I get paid:thumbs:

Just one thing. If anyone has this mech knocking around for the ball eject, maybe on a junk playfield, I’d be very grateful for it as mine is properly ****ed.

Until next time folks...

Looking good. What did you use on the cab side by the flipper? Mine has a similar amount of wear by the flipper buttons and I just need to do the same to make it beautiful again!

TAF question (for anyone that may know...) - The little stumpy metal ramp in the middle of the PF - How is that held in?? Just by the two screws at the front of the ramp???

Yes. Just the two screws.

Update

Christ it’s been a few months. I’ve been ticking along slowly. Accruing bits and bobs.

So since last time.

All metal work cleaned up and tumbled.

Wedlments re welded

Book case stripped and cleaned with new crank armature, new bookcase, new opto boards and finished off with Judge Dreads book case decal.

765794AB-F07D-4FD9-972A-5430D0F68646.jpeg

Thing mechanism stripped and cleaned

All plastics cleaned

New main ramp purchased, sent to @replicas for a some new flappage and back to me for repopulation.

Lock bar receiver and other cab parts cleaned and rebuilt

Restored playfield arrived from Chris Platt.

So that’s about where I am. Still got a few parts to tumble but my mojo is back. I’m excited for the project again and back on it.

Does anyone know if there is a file to reproduce this decal. I’ve found one on Pinball rebel but the font is black. Not a biggie but if there is one with red that’d be better.

DA4BB2FC-53C2-4012-BCED-42DE2B4E57EB.jpeg
I’m also still on the lookout for a better translite and the plastics which are transparent (the insects etc..) So if you can help please drop me a line

I’ll update with pics in a bit

I've got some bits, one of those above and a full set of unused insects, I'll have a look when I get chance, just about to go on hols. If you have a full list of stuff you need, mail me.

Thanks Spadge. Will do. There’s absolutely no hurry. Appreciate that. Have a nice holiday

Include me on the list of bits also as i seem to have accumulated a fair bit :D

Nice job - reminds me a lot of my 'Demolished Man' shop log on here which I think is even worse than yours!!! Gives you a great feeling of achievement though when you can save it and bring it back to life.

Kudos man

Cheers
