Picked up a Pinball Magic project from a member here, plenty of work to do on it although I was pleasantly surprised that a lot of it is much better than I expected :).

This is the one where the playfield has been sun damaged and at some point the cabinet has been stored somewhere damp.

Day of arrival, the cat always has to check anything new out.

Seems to be an early one serial 13 and metal side rails and a few other different details around the playfield and wiring.

Plenty of lovely mould yum yum :p

Poor Magna has some sort of infection going on haha.

The sun damage.

All in all really pleased and a great starting point.

Stripped the top half of the playfield down (will post a lot more pictures as I rebuild it). Some great details on it.

Cab although covered in mould and rust was actually pretty solid, I had to reinforce the bottom and have sealed it but no need to replace.

PXL_20230618_215508513.MP.jpg

Plenty of sanding, wood repairs, filling more sanding etc etc.

Had the purple scanned and paint mixed.

New (used) playfield arrived from Germany.

I like how they did the backbox lights (replainted the wood and cleaned up the PCB).

PXL_20230629_135540529.jpg

Sorted out lots of rust.

Next steps will be new cabinet art and swapping all the playfield components over.

Geez you're moving quick! Amazing you picked up a new(ish) playfield that was a major score for such a rare title.

I seem to attract rusty machines 😅

PXL_20230630_095457099.jpg

Better, now rince and repat several hundred times haha.

PXL_20230630_095500400.jpg

PXL_20230703_165106161.MP.jpg

New Translight

PXL_20230704_191058106.jpg

The new playfield I got had the mylar removed at somepoint but not the glue (had then been played like that), cleaned up nicely.

Quick test to see how it looks.

Cabinet done (minus side rails), onto swapping the playfield wiring now.

Great to see a classic machine safed from being broke up for spares, Fantastic work in bringing it back from the swamp kudos to you sir.

Been cracking on with the playfield swap.

Starting out without a slightly rusty in places and dirty set up but all there. Zip lock backs to keep track of it all haha.

PXL_20230705_185727349.jpg

Going through and removing all the major mechs and parts not tied to the loom.

PXL_20230706_154154594.jpg

Moving them straight across to the new playfield, cleaning, repainting and rebuilding etc as I go.

PXL_20230707_103320318.jpg

Just the loom left.

PXL_20230707_190745353.jpg

Easiest way seemed to be side by side to try keep things in the same place as much as possible.

Yoink

PXL_20230707_193034361.jpg

Just a few bits left at this point, you can see a lot of the early model differences, layout of the slingshot posts, more playfield holes around the audience, a space for a level, the ball trough is shorter etc on the new one so bits had to be re drilled etc to make the new playfield work.

PXL_20230707_193551983.jpg

PXL_20230710_151445542.jpg

Playfield back in, time to rebuild the top side.

PXL_20230709_131923593.jpg

Lots of new stickers etc to smarten bits up, new titan rubbers etc. The keen eyed will notice I am using some old screws still, waiting on a large order of new machine screws to replace lots of them.

PXL_20230712_102029736.jpg

PXL_20230712_123530714.jpg

Stage coming back together.

PXL_20230712_132556420.jpg

Apron powder coated and new decals going on.

PXL_20230712_194059402.jpg

The completed bottom side minus rebuilding the flippers (waiting on some parts to come in).

PXL_20230717_142508757.jpg

Where I am with the top side, wired back in and currently going through all the niggles, replacing switches bulb sockets etc.

Currently have an issue with the wand keeping blowing it's fuse so trying to sort that and waiting on the wire forms to come back from the platers before I can really play test.

I must say I was concerned when I seen it but you've done an incredible job in it.. Looks superb, well done 👍👍

Beautiful! I had @MajesticPinball 's PM for over a year. Loved it, linear but it teaches you how to be controlled and make the correct shots.

I think your flippers are aligned too high though, it'll make the hat shot and colour match shot really difficult or impossible. I'm not sure about capcom but with WPC you align to the hole with rubber off.

Yeah bud - flippers are wrong.
:)

Joking apart - well done - what a great job you have done.

I do not think I would of done what you have done, I would of kept it as a players machine and got it working - just because I love the game. Amazed you have saved the cabinet - kudos.

Did you upgrade the speaker drivers in the end?

If you have the old PF then I wouldnt mind first dibs..... along with first dibs if you sell the whole game.

Congrats.

Has to be said I was a bit miffed when I missed out on this cab but have to hand it to you its a quality job.
Well done.

Thanks, the old playfield is in really poor shape but if you want it drop me a PM.

I'm intrigued on the flippers, there seems to be so many different opinions on how to align them about.

My system 11 and wpc games are aligned rubber on sitting on tooth picks, this was aligned with the tooth pick held between the rubber and batt (it's what I saw on an American capcom thread).

I'll grab another picture tomorrow it could be the angle of the picture but if they need adjusting will do it.

Pretty much every part of the flippers are new (even the plates) so want to get the best out of them.

Cheers all for the other comments.

Stunning work, who'd of thought the sunburnt old girl would look that nice in the end. Beautiful game PM, I've been meaning to set mine up and clean it up for ages. Well done mate!

All of my WPC and sys11s are aligned with rubber off. I used to do it with rubber on but found they play so much better rubber off and I regularly get compliments about how good our games played especially at Pinfest recently.

I can't see the holes on your pinball magic playfield but I'm so used to flippers sitting lower that seeing them in like with the ball guides looks really off to me. I'm sure they were lower on the Pinball Magic we borrowed and even then the hat shot was challenging.

I might be wrong as it was a couple years ago now and before I changed all my flipper alignments so maybe it was like yours. If it plays nice then it's upto you at the end of the day😄
