In Progress Multipin Madness 2 - Virtual pinball build

If you're using Pinscape in this one just a heads up to say the FRDM-KL25Z board I bought the other day came with the new bootloader, so no messing about trying to find a Windows7 machine to flash it with.
Up and running in 10mins now :)

BACKBOX

Started with an old riverboat gambler backbox which was pretty battered as you can see from the photos. Had to take it apart to route the sides out to fit in the 30" screen which I will be using for the backglass artwork.

This is the progress so far. I need to finish prepping the wood and paint it before the artwork goes on.

Cabinet Prep

Being a widebody this time around I had to take whatever donar cab came my way. They are not as easy to come by so when a Demolition Man cab was available I jumped at it. It wouldn't of been my top choice purely down to the extra holes that needed filling in, but overall the cabinet was in good shape.

Lots of sanding, filling and prepping. Then my trademark internal purple and black colour scheme was sprayed on ;)

Cabinet Decals

So decal time.. Having spent out to have artwork designed for my previous build I decided to have it updated with a number 2, I also really liked it and see this as the big brother.

Having done this a few times before it's didn't seem quite as scary. Just ensure you have clean and smooth surfaces to apply the decals to. I had @PeteB print them again for me as they are very good quality and he did such a great job last time on them.

Once applied use a sharp blade to cut the excess off, I freehold a utility knife blade and find that gives really good control for what is quite a delicate job.

Electronics

This is the bit you either love or hate. If you have seen my previous build you would of seen the EZKit I used that was pretty much plug in play for 90% of the wiring. This time I have decided to give some kit called PinScape which can handle all the button inputs, feedback devices, lights, nudge etc. I will write more up on that when I get to it.

For now I have made a start on the input wiring for the buttons (2 x flippers, start, launch and extra ball) as three of these are illuminated and tied to the game logic they also have extra wires that the PinScape pcb wil control.

Screens

For the playfield a williams (super-pin) wide bodied cab can fit screens roughly in the range of 42"- 48" depending on the thickness of the screen bezel and whether you want to adjust the sides of the cabinet.

The optimum size is 46" which fills the cabinet front to back perfectly. I spent an enormous amount of time tracking down the correct screen, for starters 46" is not a popular size anymore. I also wanted to avoid making cuts to the sides of the cabinet as I've been there and could do without the extra work it brings. Response time is very important when choosing a model and also having the best viewing angles due to the fact you are looking at the screen from the side.

I managed to track down a range of Samsung Smart signage screens that you normally see in multi screen arrangements in shopping centres and probably in your local mcdonalds. These screens have the smallest bezels, so the screen is right to the edge which is important when you have them butted up next to each other. This meant I was able to find a 46" that was 2mm shy either side of my cabinet, yes no cutting or decasing needed

These screens retail for thousands but I luckily found a source from a AV company that puts them in and pulls them out again when not needed. Once ordered it turned up strapped to a pallet, the driver carried the pallet to my door and chucked it down in front of me. He then asked what is it? You should of seen his face when I told him.. He couldn't believe there was no markings on it to say no stack etc. I was a little sick. Anyway I unwrapped the small layer of bubble wrap and to my amazement it survived the journey and after a quick test I was really pleased with the results. And yes it fits too :)

Will you be venting the top of the back box ? The amount of vents in the monitor suggest it might get warm in there..

Must get my ass in gear and start mine

Yeah well spotted, there will be two huge fans in the back panel to exhaust the heat from that screen ;)
