NOTE at 30-9-2017:

Currently I manufacture and offer my DMDMK66 Multicolor DMDs, with my own firmware, better than DMDST32. With DMDMK66 does not need pay key licenses and do not need wait for any activation.

Also I'm developing the Magic Color Editor Tool to may apply advanced color frame by brame to all DMDMK66.

So I suggest check all information in last posts of this thread to be informed about current developments, because of first posts are currently out of date about DMDST32 that I have stop to manufacture.

All about DMDMK66 start in page 14 of this thread:

Thank you.

Hi
Sorry for the silly questions but what game can it be fitted to and what else needs to be done to the game to make it recognise that it is using a colour dmd?
Always fancied one but always thought installing one might be beyond my very limited skills...

hello domlouis.

Product is full compatible with all real pinball Bally/williams, Data East, Stern WhiteStar, Stern SAM and Virtual pinball (pinmame, future, etc...). And with version V2 of firmware, also support Gottlieb and Stern Spike (this firmware version require key activation, but only need pay 10 euros to firmware developer to activate it, then work forever with free updates).

For basic color option (4 colors for all except Stern SAM that play 16 colors), do not need to do any special, simply select the colors that you want apply to game with a software provided to run in PC that create a file that must store in a micro SD card in DMD. And for advanced colour there is a software to create color palettes by video sequences and even apply color frame by frame. I provide full user manuals with all instructions and sofware to config DMD and apply colors that you want.

You may check some videos in my Facebook, this is with basic color option (4 colors for Bally/Williams, you may select the colors)

It looks great and very reasonably priced. I'd like to add one to my ACDC, but I have no clue about colouring it in and no time to do it. I have seen there is colour already done for acdc how can I get a copy of that and add it to the dmd?

I am going to get one of these for my WPT. Somebody has coloured it and kindly made it available to share.

Hello Andrew.

You may find information about advanced colouring in VPuniverse forums, subforums about pin2dmd, check this link.
http://vpuniverse.com/forums/forum/132-pin2dmd/

There are three options about color for this kind of dmd:
1.- Basic: this is very easy to config, simply select a palet of colors (4 colors for all pinball, except STern SAM that work with 16 colors, I think Spike too).

2.- Color by sequences: with a PC software you may select star - end of a video animation to apply a color palette different to rest of game animations, as many animations as you want to customs colors.

3.- Advanced color: this option allow even apply color frame by frame, then may use pinballbrowser software to do it.

Here a link where a friend is working to colour a Poker Tour pinball with pin2dmd V2 and pinball browser. http://vpuniverse.com/forums/topic/2604-world-poker-tour/#entry29583

Thanks for this Luis. I have some questions.

What are the benefits of the extras (WIFI, serial port etc) ? Do you need any of these extras to colour your own games ?

Does the DMD need to be in the game to be able to use Pinball Browser to add colour ? Can it be powered on a bench and the colour added ?

What would be the total cost (including postage) to buy one that I could experiment with colouring my own games ?

I am also very interested in this and would like to know what the benefits of the adds on are.

Also, I am a very lazy man so it would be good to know if there was an intention to build up a library of games that have been coloured by someone more motivated that you could make a donation towards in return for the file to download.

- WIFI will allow in next firmware version, config DMD wireless from cell phone.
- Serial port is to connect to Stern SAM for special features, and also will allow that TOPPEr that Im preparing with bigger led panels may play special animations according with events (check status of switches and lamps).
- Battery holder and second oscillator, is to keep clock/date for animated clocks to do TOpper to place in head of pinball.

Pinball browser is a PC software to apply advanced color, this generate files that must store in micro SD card in DMD. Pinball browser only to colour by frame Stern SAM and Spike, for rest of manufacturers must use Pin2dmd Editor.

To provide you freight cost, tell me your address, or at least zip code and country, tell me also if want add extras or only DMD without it.

Hello gringo.

About features of extras, I have reply about it in before reply to Andrew.
And about games already colored, I must check it, there are some for Stern SAM, and I know there is people working with another games, really its a good idea may offer games already colored.

Am I correct in thinking this could be a good way to get colourised DMD animations on my Data East Rocky & Bullwinkle?

I think ColorDMD is a no-go right now because the LCD panel they use fouls the area where the hat trick animation sits; it sounds like this could be a good alternative and i'm quite capable of dumping the animations myself and colourising them.

Hello :

You may install DMDST32 in any Data East pinball, no problem about it.
About advanced colored by animations sequences or frames, must use the pin2dmd editor and for SAM or Spike may use pinball browser.

Here a video from a friend, this install in a Star Wars of Data East, no problem, work fine. Thiis is not good quality video, but may see like its installed in a Data East without problem, and now that power supply is smaller even fit better.

Looks good. I've grabbed the Pin2DMD editor and will have a look and see what I can do with it.

So far as I can see you can have up to 16 colours per animation frame but then it's possible to use pallette switching to get more colours in the full animation. I presume that the limitation is only 9 pallettes for the entire project so no more than 144 colours in the entire project file?

I'm interested to know what to do with non-static content; for example animations where maybe you have a backdrop or frame and then high scores displayed inside? Is some form of masking used in these cases?

Sample projects for Pin2DMD would be a massive help if anyone has some they could share. I've already dumped some of the dots from R&B using the modified vPinmame DLL but it would be handy to know how to slice the animations up.

Finally, it would be extra cool if you could link this up to the PC via USB to preview the effects as you're working on it. Is that possible? My R&B is in bits right now so this would be a project I could probably do alongside the rebuild.

I have a licensed copy of Pinball Browser on my laptop. Could I start colouring a game before I order the DMD ?

I've never coloured dots before so this might be a silly q.
But if your colouring frame by frame can you "colour" in your own animation?
Say for example you drew sunglasses on the Cftbl.........

I think you can. I've just been having a play with pinball browser and it looks like you can colour any of the pixels within a frame of animation.

I am copyrighting comedy boobs right now. :)

@Lucky1 Produces the firmware - He may be able to help with any questions too.....

@Lucky1 / Pinball SP - I am more than happy to set up a central repository here for completed colorized screen for certain machines if it would help :)

Cheers
Paul

I'm on the fence for the moment.

I need some help with the editor so I can prove that I can do what I want with it. If anyone has any experience wit Pin2DMD software that is used to do the recolouring then i'd love to hear from them. At the moment i've got some animations stripped out but the colour changes i'm making aren't being retained between frame changes.

Ok so - Worst case it's a decent cheap LED DMD replacement - write once to a 1Mb MicroSD card, Plus in, connect power, stick it in and leave it :)
Best case it's a complete system to allow colorising of the animations :)

In my eyes it's a win-win for those that havent had their machine done by one of the big boys yet, or that dont fancy the £320 cost.
