HAHA!!! Jon like it!!

Thanks Guys - this is gonna be a labour of love

Cheers Kev

Are you going to try to clean up all the screws, bolts, brackets etc or just buy all new ones?

Cheers Kev

That is one grim looking DM  Kev @newdos hows the playfield in terms of swelling or planking? The games obviously seen a lot of moisture, did any get into the wood?

no the playfield is pretty good apart from rust staining underneath and one bit of paint requiring touch up caused by the flippers. I think it will clean and polish up very well

Cheers Kev
I have a bag full of t-nuts somewhere.
Oh bugger just ordered a shed full from Titan pinball in USA - well cheap, but postage cost more than the t nuts!!!

Cheers Kev

More very slow playfield stripping tonight - now sheared approx 10 post and bolts off !!!:(

Its is becoming very apparent what a sorry state this machine is in, as you can see from the pics below !!!

Bottom end of playfield with most of the mechs off now

PC020486.JPG

One of the flipper mechs - little bit of work required here !!! this is going to take forever

PC020477.JPG

Ball trough!!

PC020465.JPG

PLayfield so far - cant get the ball guides off at the bottom so gonna have to try and drill them out - more expensive bolts to purchase!!!

PC020484.JPG

Cant get the side rails of either screw heads are rusted to bits so again will have to try and drill out - a lot of work in this beast!!

The box of rusty bits so far

PC020479.JPG
wonder if they will tumble any good ?????

Cheers Kev

HAHA!!! I know guys think it sailed here - ask @Big Phil he sold me it !!!

Note to self NEVER buy a pinball machine till you at least full pics inside and out !!!:tut:

Still I am enjoying the challenge and each day throws up a new one (and more expense!)

Good progress. I can see now this may turn out pretty nice. What's your plan for cleaning the underside of the playfield? Just sand as you go along or will it clean off with something else?

This reminds me, I REALLY need to build one of your playfield rotisserie's. Fed up of working on sawhorse trestles.

Hi Pete,

As Just about every T nut is shagged I intend to strip the playfield completely bare removing all the t nuts as well and sand the bottom to death and see what it comes out like. Because of the state of it, dont suppose it is evebr gone be perfect but I am hopeful this will clean it up na awful lot. It is just rust staining but suppose it depends how deep it has penetrated.

I found a good cheap source for the 8/32 wood screws and Tnuts so will replace most of them as a lot eaiser!!

Cheers Kev

Well more stripping and more blisters - these screw are so god damn tight!!

Some lovely playfield shots for you first !!!!

Subway - a tad mucky!!!!

PC030499.JPG

VUK is gonna need some welding - held together with tie wraps and insulating tape!!!!

PC030501.JPG

And one xmas tree wiring loom !!! looks like every lamp holder is gonna need replacing - rusted to bits - literally !

Wonder if I will ever get this back correct!!!

PC030524.JPG

SO I need ideas to get the side rails off - screw heads have gone - don't know whether its my drill bits but it doesn't seem to want to touch em ????

PC030520.JPG

The other issue is the guide lanes long screws - heads have gone - don't want to grind the top off as it will knacker plastics so ideas on a postcard please!!!!

you can just see the end of the screws in the slightly rust tee nuts !!!!

Blimey Kev isn't there a post on here about posting unacceptable images  Seriously, big respect for saving this machine, it's making my current project seem a stroll in the park

Titex drills are harder than regular HSS drills and so should work ok.
Have you ever used stud extractors Kev ? You drill a hole down the centre of the broken screw and use the extractor to remove the broken screw.

Give them a pre-soak with WD40 first.

Have you got welding facilities ? If you are stuck for welding I can help.

Hey guys thanks again the support on here is amazing!!!

Like the sound of Titex drills - may check them out - anywhere to get them in particular ?

Got a friend Andrew who hopefully can do a bit of welding for me, if that fails I will certainly give you a shout

Cheers

I know its bad man but I cant wait to do the first sand on the bottom of that playfield(that's once I get all the bleeding posts out!!!!)

Cheers Kev

@newdos this DM has more rust than my old mini metro that I had when I was at college which I thought could never be outdone. I was the laughing stock of the res  hats off to you for persevering and still staying positive.

Just an idea if there are stained areas after sanding could use some of this stuff on it. I don't know if you've used it before but it brushes on just like water. I used it on my Hook cabinet on suspect areas.

AH ok @astyy never used that stuff before does it work good ?

Cheers Kev

It does what it says on the tin!

Seriously, I'm not sure but it's very easy to apply and doesn't make things any worse.
ok man will take a look after I have sanded it and see how it looks first

Cheers Kev

So a quick update on current playfield status

Pics here show whats left on it and are basically stuck there (other than posts with sleeves on I hope) due to rusted knackered screw or bolts. Ordering specialist solid carbide drills to see if I can get the lanes and side rails off

PC040525.JPG PC040526.JPG PC040527.JPG PC040528.JPG

Removed that steel and there was only 1 nylock to get off and guess what the sodding thing has sheared off - so how do I fix this guys if it all ????
PC040530.JPG

Here is a close up of the lampholders on the loom - knackered and there is at least 50 of them !!! many thanks to @Andrew Stockdale who has sent me a bag full(yet to arrive) of holders that I hope will go a long way to replacing a lot of the really bad ones.

How about the centaur 2 on ebay instead ?
F*** f*** f***ety f*** f*** A project CENTAUR II. **** bastards. I'd have sold my kids for that.

@newdos PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE keep going on this. Not sure if there's anything I've got that can help as most of it's old Bally SS (got a lot of electronics spares though) but I think it's awesome you're taking this on. It'll never be a minter without replacing 90% of everything at which point you might as well have started with a better donor machine, but if this turns out a good player then it shows what can be done with time and effort, and will make a great example for future reference and encouraging more restorations.

¡VIVA LA RESTORATION!

HAHA!!!! love it Pete and thanks again - Its just the bloody rust shagging everything up. I found a good cheap source for new nuts, playfield screws and Tnuts. A lot of the Tnuts and some of the obscure bolt/machine screw sizes I am replacing with equivalent metric sizes as the new t nuts and bolts/screws are mega cheaper and in much easier supply. @replicas is helping me out with some of the posts that have sheared, so again, big thanks to everyone and by the time I get this beast finished I think it will have be a community machine!!!

I think @Big Phil should buy it back and use it as a centre piece for the NERG and PLAY gigs and then raffle it off haha!!!!

Cheers Kev

pc040530-jpg.23844

Get some threaded bar and flatten the end in a vice or press. Tidy up and shape the flattened end with a Dremel and drill a hole for the rivet, then cut the threaded part to length. I though I was going to have to do one of these on a guide for GOLD BALL but it was ok in the end, but made me think about how I'd make a replacement, so I start to experiment.
