Anyone here used a courier service to collect & deliver a pin? It seems like a more sensible option than driving across the country, but I'm not sure what the seller would need to do preparation wise?

I'm guessing I would be relying on the seller to remove legs, fold down (and strap up?) the backbox? Is it as simple as that? Any other gotchas? Are there courier firms that would specialise in things like this?

No prizes for guessing I am a complete pinball newbie! Thanks kindly for any advice.

I have used speedlink transport before

http://www.speedlinktransport.co.uk/

Pretty much as you say, remove the legs and strap the head up, and put some protection around it.

They will give you guidelines to prepare the machine.

Good prices, I only paid £95 to get a machine from Scotland to the south coast.

Superb stuff Adam, thanks kindly. Just spoke to the guy there. Very friendly indeed, will be using them for sure

I have another question : I believe its a good idea to remove the balls from the machine - but my seller isn't sure how to do that. Me either.

Its a Batman Forever machine. I'm sure it involves using the service menu, which I know is done with magic buttons inside the coin door. Are those buttons labeled at all? Is it straightforward enough to just poke at until the relevant menu option appears?

no need to use the menu buttons, with the machine switched off ,undo the lockbar, slide the glass out, lift the table up and out until it rests on the front edge of the machine, look under the table and find the ball feeder /upkicker for the balls and use your finger to flick the ball up into the launch lane,

That certainly works for Bally Williams games but I *think* Sega games of that era, like Data East, have a lockout coil/mech that stops the ball leaving the trough and moving onto the ball eject mech which then kicks it into the lane. Which makes releasing the balls manually a bit of a pain.

I would use the menu - its pretty easy to find the Easy Trough Clear option. Or shove a couple of rags in the outhole and launch lane

Apparently my seller isn't even sure how to get the glass off . I'm keeping my fingers x'd. Thanks for the advice guys!

Where is the seller based ? Might be a idea to find out then ask if anyone on group lives near. Maybe they could pop round and assist in sorting it ready to be transported.?

Worth a try.

I'll give him a ring tonight to see how he's getting on. We were hoping the courier would collect it sometime tomorrow.

But if anyone is around the SS5 area of Essex, and available (ideally tonight - Tues 27th Sep) it would be really appreciated!

Turns out he's packed socks into the drain/launch lane! Think he had someone round today to help him, so should be all good I hope. Thanks again to all for advice!

I have seen loads of pins with damaged siderails with the head folded and strapped to it.

a good idea is to get a bit of insulation for a water pipe about £1.20 from b and q, slit it, and "clip" it over the top edge of the back box before folding the backbox down.

If no insulation available I would suggest careful padding between head and siderails - without putting pressure on the glass.

Regarding your other problemm - getting the balls out, you could have a game with the glass off, and just lift out each ball one at a time.

good luck with it all.

I use Speedlink all the time, excellent cheap service, a bit slow for me due to my geography but would be much quicker for most I'm sure, they are delivering my SS as we speak, they collected within 3 days but takes about 10 days to get to me here as I am off the beaten path.

They have saved me hours of legwork and a fortune in fuel and van hire, no need to strap to a palate etc

Tony and Dave are good guys.

I am pretty lucky as Speedlink are based only 500 yards from my house so pickups are no problem and like Andy has already said they are a great company to deal with.

Also Gaming Direct are another great company and also offer excellent service.

I used Gaming Direct to ship a game down from Aberdeen to London about 18 months ago had to wait a week or so. but arrived when they said it would

no damage whatsoever and the driver helped me get it in to my outbuilding ,Cost £95.00 much cheaper than driving up to Scotland and back to pick up a pin. Hired a van the other month to pick a pin up from South London cost £52 .oo inc petrol. Bit of a no brainer really if you need a pin shipping a long distance but you are buying sight unseen if you trust the seller, if they are on the group or forum you should be OK

Speedlink £75 tops providing there is no congestion charge, I know it looks like I am promoting but I am merely supplying the cost info.

P.S, don't forget to tell Tony and Dave that Andy in N Wales recommended them when you call LOL

You on commission Andy?

Hi Daz, nope' just like what these guys have done for me over the last 18 months, they have made the difference between getting a pin and thinking "F**k it, it's too much mither, maybe next time when it's closer", thing is they are never close
